If I'm being honest, I think it's a bullshit excuse more than a worrying trend. These guys had no problem telling actors that had read the books "no lol, you don't get a bigger part, you dead next episode".
george lucas used the same bullshit excuse when he sold his baby to disney. truth is, as much as I disliked the prequel trilogy, and as much as an unprofessional twatwaffle as he's recently proven to be, I don't blame him for bailing out. there was a time, not too long ago, when wavering filmmakers' only fear was to lose profits and fall into obscurity. for example I highly doubt that ff coppola had to deal with all this toxicity when he made that godfather 3 abortion. people just didn't like it, lost interest, and that was that. the end. no campaign of petitions/hatemail/accusations/threats/etc from the internet babyman mafia.
