The creative team from the movie previously elaborated on Thanos strength, revealing that he did not need nor did he even use the Infinity Stones to defeat the Hulk. Instead he handily beat him at his own game, with brute strength, in the films opening scene.
Read the quotes. He ripped the stones from the heroes the entire film. Look at Thor being used as a prisoner and manhandled by Thanos. Looks pretty weak here tbh. Oh Thor.

Thanos won. Thor loses all the time to Hela, to Kurse, to Thanos he just cannot seem to catch a break. Lucky for him marvel is way more powerful and can help the avengers since they already lost to Thanos.

Correction, Thanos with an infinity stone and an entire army defeated them. Meanwhile at the end of the movie Thor throws Stormbreaker through a blast from a completed Infinity Gauntlet, leading to the axe being embedded in Thanos' chest. Which rendered Thanos completely unable to attack and set him running away through a portal.

He returned fire nothing more nothing less, same as he did for everyone else he fought.
