Thor stopped holding back is what happened. He never tries to kill mortals, thats why Hulk doesn't get destroyed as easy as Galactus and The Blackest Night did. Because Thor uses the kid gloves on puny Banner.

So the Ebony Blade used to be a vampire fang. And there was an alternate universe Ebony blade too?

Has there ever been other "replacements" like this, but ones that effectively became the mainstream versions of lost originals?

I can point out one example from Transformers Regenesis One, where the Matrix of Leadership became corrupted into a sort of "Dark Matrix" entity, and Hot Rod had to steal a Matrix from another universe's killed Rodimus Prime to ascend. So technically, mainstream Rodimus Prime doesn't exist, he's a product of an off brand "Imaginary story".

Anything else like this?
