He's a god now. latest issue (with Hitch on artwork) has Eddie just zipping in and out across the universe.

He started as a villain, then became an anti-hero (Lethal Protector, Wolverine assraped Brock so hard in one issue that Eddie reconsidered his entire life's choices and villain career) and now... after King of Black saga, it's tough to categorize him. Hero? Godlike being? Or just confused?

He's never become a boyscout or a role model, though.

Yeah. Anti-hero is as much as I'm probably gonna like, I think.

Pretty much every write jettisons everything which came before. Rucka literally made entire new 52 WW comics non canon, five years of comics were only dreams lol.

Yea true.

With Magneto there's the whole mental illness thing, though whether people want to take that seriously it's up to them. Juggernaut is all over the place.

Omg Pr being Jewish isn't a mental disease you can't say that

Sorry, I should correct myself then.

Magneto is mentally ill? Where it was said?

He's powered through his PTSD.

There is no cure for megalomania and narcissism.

Sounds shite.

I like it that they're trying something new with the character.

But it needs to be said that all that crazy wanking and exposure happens only because of Sony films and because Marvel is trying hard to apologize to their fans for making Eddie basically go missing for 15 years. Worse than actually killing the character.

Sure, he was Anti-Venom and Toxin, but fans made it crystal clear there was only one Venom they loved.

First of all, **** you for making me look it up on so little sleep.

Okay, way back in adjectiveless X-Men #2, it was revealed that Moira had ****ed with Magneto's genetics when he was de-aged. Moira believed that Magneto's DNA was inherently unstable, and that he was simply too powerful for his own body. The belief was the more he used his powers, the more mentally ill he became (ie nuts). Moira tried to fix it, but obviously failed.

Magneto, as you can imagine, doesn't take this well when he finds out from Cortez.

I mean, I don't know if it was ever retconned or referenced again, but ****ing hell, I feel like it's a brilliant catch-all to explain how a man that struggles with himself one minute is levitating bridges the next. Plus, Claremont wrote it so I give him a bit more leeway than most writers.

Yeah it's a very roundabout way to eventually come back, and even then it's shite that the best they can do is some bullshit with Knull.

Yeah, Claremont tried to explain why the generic insane Silver Age version of Magneto was so different from his one, so essentially he got Mutant Rabies from his powers frying his brain. At the same time, he didn't want his reformation to be due to Moira, so Magneto turning into a good guy [for a while] was legit Erik's own choice, since her changes were never present:

Or you can chalk it up to him getting younger [and thus brain healed].

This part was referenced but without much detail in Claremont's Excalibur run:

Magneto continues to be bitter about her, of course.

Nobody really gives a shit about this other than Claremont, btw. They make him evil or good at whims. It's basically his own headcanon.

Yeah, that's the one. And I'm not surprised nobody used it after, though that's why I couldn't remember if it had ever been brought up again.

Honestly, I do like it though. I think it's a solid explanation for why he's so inconsistent. Cheap? Sure, but if you were handed an X-Men book tomorrow to write about Magneto, it's something you could come back to.

Thing is, Magneto's been severely tampered with and depowered/repowered/amped several times since then, so we can't be sure it still applies?

Great bit of info, though. Much appreciated. Phil as always doing his homework.

Eh, it wouldn't be the first time I folded something in to my X-Men headcanon of shite that should still apply because modern writers are garbage.

You're romanticizing the past, forgetting that you got assraped by the past, Pr.

I'm not pretending the past was perfect. Just that it was better.

That's the nostalgia effect.

Still, comics are indeed lazily made these days and mass-produced.

You know what I miss about old books? Those big ass caption boxes, giving readers info on what old (or current) issues they should check to understand the references.

It used to be a regular thing. Not only it was helpful, it gave you that feeling that of shared universe.

Now it's being avoided at all costs...

Is it still nostalgia if the books are legitimately better? I mean, if your answer is yes, then okay.

That's because continuity doesn't exist anymore.

Some are, some are not.

You're clearly suffering from the old man syndrome even more than the rest of us.

Which is kind of ironic, considering that in the age of the Internet and smartphones it would easier than ever to care about continuity.
