The potential is there, no doubt. But Trump will probably tuck tail despite his very severe threats against Iran, remember his "Fire and Fury!" threats to N.K.? They turned out to be toothless. This is all a distraction for Trump and it's working, going too far could ruin that.
The bases Iran attacked were largely unpopulated (edit: or unpopulated outright?), why they attacked those and there seems to be zero casualties, I think tonight or tomorrow we'll get Trump tough-talk-tweeting, puffing out his chest some more and declare he won, but not order another strike, though declaring he's not ruling one out with a "we'll see" or similar comment he likes using.
At least I hope so, for all we know Trump flattens an Iranian base full of people, killing hundreds. But I doubt it.
^ The latter is what I'm worried about. The man is such a wildcard that I could easily see him going scorched earth and kicking off WWIII.
And it seems that Iran has the support of Russia and China, so going to war with them wouldn't be good...for anyone.
Hopefully he looks at the bigger picture before kneejerk reacting... ermm

The Iranian regime gets to save face to the Iranian public by spinning that they got ultimate revenge for Soleimani and Trump gets his distraction, at least to his supporters (see a pattern between Trump and Iran's regime?). Trump can also float this longer if he needs, by making more threats and pounding his chest. WWIII though, not happening. Nor a full scale war with Iran, not even the Republicans would want that while Trump is POTUS, they know he's incompetent and not mentally/emotionally fit for the job.

the game has changed, we don't need to deploy massive amount of soldiers and can win the war with minimum casualties.
their weak attack on the airbases in Iraq so far looks like fireworks, and they know they'd **** up if they kill more than single digits US soldiers. this is just all for show to their people so they don't appear soft. but deep down they are shitting their pants wanting none of the heat.
