Looking at that graph, it looks like the deficit went up and up and up after the Tory's came into power.
Tbf thats debt, not deficit. Debt will continue to rise as long as theres a yearly deficit. But IIRC they did get yearly deficit down to almost zero at one point when they were going crazy with the cuts

It sure did. And that's despite the massive spending cuts and austerity. That's what happens with rampant corruption, cronyism and sheer incompetence.
Good examples over the years would be Theresa May giving a shipping contract to one of her husband's friends to bring goods to the UK post Brexit despite the company having no ships.
Or Johnson's government giving Serco a £540,000,000 contract unopposed to provide test and trace kits because one of his ministers had a paid 6 figure consultantancy with them. They also had to recall 750,000 of those kits because they were defective. They then stopped providing free kits at test centres so most peoples only option was to buy Serco kits from retailers at £5 a pop.
Or there was Sunak's well run furlough scheme that ended up with rampant fraud to the tune of 40,000+ allegations that resulted in zero convictions despite estimated costs being in excess of £10,000,000,000. This was despite then being warned that it was open to massive fraud before it was implemented.
Then there was the buying of £4,000,000,000 of defective PPE that had to be burned. A large chunk of which they bought from a Turkish tshirt salesman. And a further £6,000,000,000 wasted buying PPE at way above market prices.
Then there was the disastrous test and trace scheme that cost £36,000,000,000. Only came in 8 months into the pandemic and never worked. It only ever highlighted a single case of an outbreak linked to a venue. Incorrectly diagnosed 20,000 positive cases as negative resulting in an estimated 1,500 preventable deaths. Gave 4,000,000 false positives. Had some people driving 1,000 mile round trips to get tested.

It's the here as over your side of the pond. The supposed small government, fiscally responsible conservatives run a deficit and the only times there's been a budget surplus was under the big spending lefties (Blair and Clinton were the last ones)
Another vote winner there Rishi.
Sunak appointing the same bunch of completely incompetent diddies that Truss did just in different cabinet roles including appointing some as "minister without portfolio" so they can claim a minister's salary whilst doing sweet FA. Normal corrupt degeneracy has recommenced.
On the bright side, at least the Victorian serial killer, Jacob Rees-Mogg has gone.

^ Pound already regaining. Exactly what I said would happen.
Hes also smart reappointing that immigrant killer (keeps the members and Tory right happy), whilst keeping Hunt as Chancellor to keep the markets calm and unite both ends of the party.
Like I said, he was their best hope. Will see now what his budget brings and if he can last the 2 years or if the Johnson faithfuls manage to boot him out and trigger an election and wipe the Torys out for good.

Rumours are his budget will involve reducing or scrapping energy costs help. So Truss destroys any benefit from her own policy by instigating a spike in interest rates, meaning people's mortgages and rents soar to unmanageable levels then Sunak removes the help on energy costs, spiking people's bills to unmanageable levels. I know he's feeling the pain of it. It's costing him £15,000 a year just to heat his swimming pool.
His banking overlords will be pleased.
Can't vote against them if you're living in a tent I suppose. lulz.
Doubt it. In his leadership race he pointed out he would focus help on those who needed it most. So targeted like his furlough scheme (which he reminded us of today). Different to Truss’s general cap for everyone.
But will find out in his budget. Thats supposed to be his strength so if he faks that up then he’s fak’d.
Then will depend on the Tory MPs if they vote his proposals through.
He's never been known to be thorough in his implementation. He was warned his furlough scheme was rife for fraud and so it became. Estimated £4b fraudulently claimed with HMRC saying half of it went to organised crime.
Last point is a big one. A fair few of them will likely be digging their heels in. Mogg, Dorries, Chope. Likely taking a fair few others with them.
A party of backstabbing, opportunistic maniacs...
Let's see if the other party of backstabbing, opportunistic maniacs can go long enough without eagerly blowing their own feet off as they have done for the last 2 general elections.
Oh well. Scottish independence coming right up.
Ha! I would vote SNP if I could. At least Sturgeon makes it clear what she stands for, and shes not scared to say what she disagrees with without looking at an opinion poll after the fact.
But right now Labour are looking at a huge majority, so there will be no other power, or room for negotiation. Would be nice if they used that power to go back into the EU, but theyve ruled that out as an option. So our economy will be fak’d for a long time even after the energy crisis calms down.
I vote for them in GE's through lack of options as they have a pact with the Scottish Greens who don't field candidates against the SNP in Westminster. The biggest issue with the SNP is they write badly formulated legislation that wastes money. Their flagship Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012 for example. Or their decision to prosecute Count Dankula being way too authoritarian for my liking (even though I think he's a prick and his joke was shite)
My hometown was one of only 2 places that voted for Independence in 2014 and they were rewarded with savage cuts because the SNP clearly thought they could do what they wanted and still get the support of voters. The whole place is an utter shambles now. Half the shops in the city centre are vacant. Junkie bobbleheads stot about screaming abuse at each other. Meanwhile the cities park are dilapidated and overgrown dumps. But hey. We've got a fancy museum and an Eden Project and Europe's biggest E-Sports arena on the way....maybe.

I'd be careful of being too critical on that point, as benefits tend to attract fraud, which is why that's traditionally been a right wing talking point.
Besides the opposition wanted more furlough for the self employed, and the example Starmer brought up in Parliament when interviewed later, we found out he didn't get anything because he was declaring losses the last few years. If you gave it to people like that, it would just reward those who had probably been evading taxes, IOW it would be directly helping fraudsters.
But HMRC does go back and check on people who claimed it so it's their risk to take.
