As Lizzie hits Norrington over the head:
A little bit of foreshadowing when you think about it, what is Elizabeth willing to do to save somebody’s life, how does Elizabeth get out of situations where they’re both in danger? And that ability to turn on one of your own .
Jack & Liz at Tortuga
Now wait this is important to how the compass works, it points to what you want – not your hearts desire! I don’t know where that came from & what you want most can be changeable as seen in this scene. Obviously what she[Elizabeth] wants most is to find Will, but Jack is actually able to plan in her mind, that what she wants most is the chest – to save will.
But it’s also really important to say that, Jack doesn’t touch it [the compass] after this moment and at the moment, the compass isn’t dealing with anything that Jack wants, it’s playing completely off Elizabeth at this point.
Persuade me:
Ah! Yet another compass insert. My feeling was that the compass should shift over to Jack, or in the direction of jack I should say briefly, then shift back & maybe it is shifting back when she looks down there. I think she’s very upset about what she just saw. I do think it should shift over, just made it a brief shift then it shift back, but again its, well I guess it was some of the Disney publicity that stuff that says it points to your hearts desire – we said no, its what you want and that’s when lust happened, I think her wants could waver in that moment.
The bit on the stairs & Curiosity:
She [Elizabeth] is in fact troubled Yeah that marriage is coming back. One of the cut lines at that point, was that Jack said: “I love marriage, its like a wager to see who will fall out of love first” And then followed up with a proposal of a sorts, but I don’t think jack is proposing actual marriage, actually something quite different. So, Elizabeth is a little bothered by the fact that there’s at least some sort of physical attraction to Jack, even though she loves Will. And now Jack is just being kind; he’s just, basically making her feel bad…you know I always go back to on the island, he knows she played him and so he’s gaming her the same way. He’s just getting back at her. Well, also, he’s justifying the issue of the compass lets say he finds himself - how can be possibly be attracted to Elizabeth uh, she’s not his type so to speak, but here he’s fishing and making the claim that deep down she is his type else why he’d be attracted to her. Justification. And then she turns it around and is like, well okay if you’re going to be playing these games, I’m gonna play them back and then it becomes a little bit too much for both of them. She’s justifying her interests in him and theres a..a great momnt of challenge here where she sets it up so Jack can’t win, she sets it up so the only way that you can prove the only way you can gain the rewards of someone like her is to not compromise someone like her and therefore Jack can never have what he wants. But the fun is, is that they’re both playing at who’s gonna break first? They’re basically saying they want the other one but they don’t want the other one, so they’re challenging each other saying: “This is why, this is the only possibility I would ever want you” Right its turns: I want you on my terms not your terms….yeah but I want you on me terms not your turns – so who’s terms are gonna be met? So how do you think she would have responded to a kiss right then
? I don’t think she would have allowed it to happen to tell you the truth. She wanted to push him as far as he could be pushed, and if he had tried she would have said “see….” But I think a part of her would have liked to have been kissed, but….at that point I think she would have held out.
No, I don’t think she would have kissed him at all.
---- the rest:
Here’s a key moment on the compass, although you don’t see it – she turns around and walks back the other way to where the needle spun, there, she does it again. So basically, the needle is going back and forth and of course the reason is she’s passed over the very spot, there it is frustration. This is one of the things where, the blocking was so important here and now she’s sat directing down back and Jack actually figures out where the chest is just triangulation.
Well, my interpretation is that she was the last one to touch the compass and now its actually swinging back to the point at where she’s at.
Well, no, it was always point to the chest. She walks to one point, walks back, walks back to the first point, sits down, throws the compass to one side, like I said, triangulation.
But of course Elizabeth thinks for some reason she is betraying Will. That’s what she thinks, and for some reason, it was actually pointing to Jack. And, interestingly, Jack knows the truth that it was always pointing to the chest
Elizabeth has the compass, what she wants most is to find the chest to save Will. They find the chest
The kiss:
The erm, the kiss, the novelist had a great description of that that she wrote to us, it was: the kiss of death scene she [Elizabeth] gets to both slake her lust and literally drown her guilt for feeling lust for somebody other than Will. Would she have been to sever on Jack, if she had not been so tempted by him? When he’s dead, he’s no longer a temptation. She had to admit that she does feel something, that she does have this desire as well. But then she holds back. I just want to point out another thing that I really like, its just, the chain, the first time they met it was about him being shackled, and using her to escape from that, from here, the end comes back again.
Something that doesn’t get debated on the betrayal to Will, so to speak, is that how much did Elizabeth way the fact the only way she could save Will, was to kiss Jack. I think that was everything about it, yeah, of course she wants to save every body , well – all the people she can, but, out of all of them, that kiss may have been done out of a desire to save him more than anybody. Well, like Louisa said, slake her lust, drown her guilt and save the man she loves.
Well we actually came up with this, the basic of Elizabeth sending Jack to his death to save Will, back when we were working on the first movie and the firs time someone actually talked about they said that would be a really good ending to go for.
Yeah, if you know there’s this chemistry between the two characters, you know you ask yourself the question, what is the one situation where you can actually get a kiss between them that would be legitimate, that would be true to all of the characters and that was the solution. We also knew it was a very tough thing to do – name a movie in which one of the hero’s kills the other to save somebody else, its not one of those things that happens a lot.
It was all knowing that we had Keira, and she could do this and make the character real, you know, it was all the responses that gave us the confidence to do it – people have sympathy for her.
At Tia Dalma’s cave:
Now, at this point Elizabeth does raise her glass…yeah she does raise her glass but she cannot drink
