(Hit Me) Baby One More Time [a.k.a. the Catholic school girl "here I am, world!" song]

Ah, I've finally reached one of the big hits. And by 'hits,' I'm not referring to the same thing Britters is referring to in this song. For everyone over 14 years old, I'm sure they were surprised to hear a song come out with a title like this! For those under 14-years old, I wonder what parents explained to their child when they told them the song wasn't about physical abuse! 😑

There's a reason this was chosen as Britney's coming out party (no, not that kind of coming out)...it was actually a decent song (ahem...in relevance, keep in mind). For that, and for the video that millions of twenty-two year old men played over and over again with the volume turned down, it deserves a high rating.

You naughty creature! 😠

There is a reason they changed the title of that song, and it was exactly for the reason you just gave. The official title is ...Baby, one more time. Not Hit Me baby one more time. 😠

Bad Bad Bad! (I hope you feel severley scolded................... 😛 )

This is my favourite song off of the album and is the main saving grace of this era IMO.

E-Mail My Heart

I'm sitting here this morning, waiting to find out how to send an internal organ over the Internet, and as the song loads I soon find out that it's not the dance number I expected. This is a sappy love song.

With the chat room excerpts of "E-mail my heart and say our love will never die / I know you're out there and I know you still care," the listener has no choice but to pray to God that Britney knows the person she's sending the Instant Message to. I hope for her sake it isn't something creepy like some woman in Britain communicating with some guy in North Carolina - that is scary, folks.

Back to the song - I don't like ballads and will probably trash most of Britney's, but I think this song serves its purpose with a tune most young girls can relate to. The melody is sappy enough to make you almost care for a 13-year old girl deciding her entire love life rests in the hands of hitting "Send Now" on her Internet browser.

Well, for someone who isn't a fan of ballads, you seem to be rating those higher than the rest at the moment!

I must confess, when I bought the BOMT album, I wasn't all that impressed with it. I thought it was far too sugary sweet. But then I was 19 at the time so I was probably too old to be listening to most of it!

Obviously, I still haven't heard your reviews on a couple, so I shall keep my opinions on those to myself at the moment, but out of the ones we've talked about so far, the only ones I really like are ....Baby, one more time, (You Drive Me) Crazy - The Stop Remix and Born To Make You Happy. I used to like Sometimes, I'm So Curious and I Will Still Love You, but I've so badly outgrown those now! As for the others, I've never liked them, especially not that damned Soda Pop! Dreadful song!

The Beat Goes On

I'm not sure what to make of this, but it certainly seems out of place! I can't understand any of the words on my office computer speakers, so all it sounds to me is a bunch of timpani bongos with some girl talking sultry as an overtone. I know it's only a short sample, but if that's indicative of the whole song, I don't like it.

It's a cover, but I'm not a fan either. I definately think it's her worse cover to date. It's just a boring song I think.

Like the sig, G, now that you mention the theme! Also, in that last picture, is that Britney's "girl-next-door" shot?

That's a shot from the video for From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart. Controversially enough, the director for that video apparently directed porn movies. Funnily enough, after it hit the press, Britney never used him again....................

Still need reviews on From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart, I Will Be There and I'll Never Stop Loving You.
At the moment, Botankus rates the ....Baby, one more time era at 43%. I wonder if his reviews for the other three songs will push the percentage up a little?

I Will Be There

The song sample starts out with about 100 people chanting a chorus that strongly resembles the popular Celine Peon song bag, "All Coming Back to Me Now," (again, bag) but then changes direction to focus a bit more on Britney's vocals - which take a dramatic shift towards the R&B side of a 10-year old . The vocals are hardly recognizable, and I feel at this point that the song has gotten away from young Britney.

She's lost control of the song, and looks like it may have been on loan to Celine for a good while before it was recovered. I do, however, think it's a perfect song for a Sunday drive in the countryside - if all your CD's are broken.

Yes, Whoever wrote that song should have been shot. There's only one other song from this era that I like, and you haven't reviewed it yet. I wonder if you can guess which one it is????

By the way, the last review pushed the percentage up to 47%!!!!

I'll Never Stop Loving You

This ballad, by far the worst one I've heard on this album, is strictly textbook. If you don't understand what I mean by that, consider these lines:

"I will make you this vow
And promise you now
I'm here forever...
I'll never stop loving you"

Maybe if they'd thrown in a few sounds of dolphins squawking or a supersonic whoosh, it would have livened it up a bit.

Britrogue, I hope this wasn't the one out of the last two that you so dearly loved. If it was, I pity the man who hears this played on his birthday on a CD strategically placed in his car CD player in hope of brightening his day. I only hope he doesn't run off the road instead.

From The Bottom of My Broken Heart

Okay, as I try to decide which of these last two you liked better, I've tried considering the titles of the two:

"I'll Never Stop Loving You" Perhaps.
"From The Bottom of My Broken Heart" Oh, I know you pesky women, always feeling better when you can express your deepest depressions. Because of that, I think "Broken Heart" is the one you liked better.

Now on to the song. I apparantly saved the 2 ballads for last. Believe it or not, I'm beginning to miss "You Drive Me Crazy!"

FINALLY we are through with the ...Baby, one more time era. We have had the reviews of a non-Britney fan, now for the opinion of a dedicated fan.
Having loved Britney since February 1999 when I first heard ...Baby, one more time on the radio, you may be surprised to learn that I didn't actually buy the album until she had released the fourth single, Born To Make You Happy.
Obviously BOMT goes down in History as one of my favourite songs (it has fond memories!), Sometimes was a nice feel good song for an 18 year old to listen to, but lost it's appeal pretty quickly, Crazy was another great dance track, and Born To Make You Happy is just a really nice song IMO. After it was released, I finally had enough faith in an artist to rush out and buy their album.
I'll be honest, I was extremely disappointed. To start with, Crazy was replaced with the reasonably dire album version, and then I have the pleasure ( 😘 ) of hearing Soda Pop for the first time. Apart from BOMT, Crazy, BTMYH and From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart, I personally think that the other tracks were forgettable, bland and too sugary-sweet.

So, we have the following ratings from both a fan, and a non-fan.

Botankus - 52%
Britrogue - 54%

I started a new message, 'cos the first was getting Waaaay too long!

Wow, I wouldn't have predicted being within 2 percentage points of you in a million years!

Okay, I'll start with the new reviews Thursday and Friday, though I did look at the song list.

"The Joy of Pepsi." Hmmm...I'm a Coca-Cola drinker (strictly!), so this song had better blow this bloke's socks off to get a decent grade!

Oops, I Did It Again

First things first, now that we're in the new Britney era: What's with the fallout in vocals? It sounds about twice as squeaky and nasal, which I guess is cool nowadays. Perhaps I'm behind on the movement that says you have to sing like your nose is clogged up with mud in order to be any good. If Britney talks like this in real life, I'm proud of her for joining the thousand of girls whose voice "suddenly" changed (imagine that!) between the ages of 19-21...depending on what year it occurred for their tone of speaking to determine how popular they would be.

Okay, onto the song. It's not as good as the song formerly known as "Hit Me Baby One More Time," but it is deserving of being released. The chorus is catchy, and everyone knows it, so it must be worth something of value to this world. If she could only do something about the voice in the verses, this song could have done better. Overall, not bad.

BTW, my neighbor's 11-year old girl did a cover of this song last week when they were visiting last Friday. We hooked up the microphone and did some goofy covers. Her version was "Oops, I farted again."

It went like this:

"Oops, I farted again;
I stunk up the room.
And made a Kaboom."

It was hilarious (I'm a bit juvenile, as you very well know)! It was me that suggested for her to sing "Oops, I did it again," and she took it from there. Ahh, the genius ability of children...

Stronger

This song definately took a page out of whatever Janet Jackson has left in this world with all the loud explosions, kabooms (there's that word again), and electronic noises that tries to make the song seem more intense. Kind of reminds me of Jackson's Control album.

Here's a random assortment of lyrics from the almost 2-minute sample:

"Here I Come, on my own / Don't Need Nobody Anymore / 'Cause Now I'm Stronger Than Yesterday/ Now it's nothing but a (byway?) / My Loneliness Ain't Killing Me No More"

Awwww...Well, now that I know that last part, I can sleep at night.

As you might have guessed, the parts which feature those words are not the strongest parts. Actually, the bridge after Britney exclaims, "I used to go with the flow," leading up to another chorus which sounds like 100 people are participating - is the best part. Her old flow was more like a boy band. Her new flow is a boy band with a building falling down around them. There is one more thing about this song, and it has scared me to death: I see it as a song that can grow on a person. I need to cut off the endless cycle on my media player, because I have upgraded it from a 5.0 to a 6.0 after a few listens.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Let me just start out by saying that the Rolling Stones themselves ruined the chances of this song getting a good rating here. This (and everything else they've ever done) has always been one of my least-liked songs. Even when they made that movie with Justine Bateman in 1987 called Satisfaction, it still stucked. Guess which band I won't be watching during the Super Bowl halftime show! Hint: Initials are R.S.

Here are some lyrics, please try to stay awake.
"I Can't Get No.....zzzzz....'Cause I try, and I....zzzzz...."

Don't Go Knockin' On My Door

Nothing special here, but I'm having trouble figuring out whose door is not to be knocked on. You kind of sense it's her obsession because when Britney says, "I can't make you love me / I'm just a girl with a crush on you," you really feel her desperation.

If it were my door, she wouldn't even have to knock. In fact, I'd be surprised if her hand even reached the knocker. My hand would, though. Okay, okay, I'm being bad here when I'm supposed to be reviewing a song. Let's cut out for the weekend with a promising 5.0 out of 10.0, shall we?
