Yes, but I think the death of Punk as a sincere form of expression began when the genre became commercial... it was diluted, and trivialised, and made (like so many other art forms from painting to sculpture, to heavy metal) to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to satisfy the pockets of the record companies... Punk (like so much else) was about individualism and originality, the opposite of the skinhead movement, which was about the conformity of the mass... when Punks began "conforming" to a dress code and mode of behaviour, it was the death knell of yet another attempt at anarchy... and the executioner was, as always, capitalism...
yeah, I am, Jello WAS the dead kennedys, without him, they're just another lame surf band with a former child star singing badly. and yes, Dr. No suck ass.
does anyone here like Doc Corbin Dart and the Crucif*cks? Millions of Dead Cops? The Feederz? The Circle Jerks? TSOL? The Adolescents? Flipper?
Also, what would Flipper be? Noise rock? grunge? their lead singer Will Shatter once called it "Pet Rock".
"Oi " is is not a type of punk, traditionally, now people try so hard to rationalise the unrational. So in theory punk shouldn't be called anything but "irational". Everything becomes popular, but not the true baseness, what you say is now the pop feeling of punk, is not punk, so why is it familarized with it, because people don't know what their talking about. Punk never died, is dead, or will die, it's just a feeling. Nothing more nothing lee, don't put restraints on it.

Punk isnt dead as long as we still listen to the music. I know that sounds like preachey shit but thats what i believe.
That's one of greatest things I've probably ever heard anybody say.

Popular does not make anything less punk. Music is an evolving thing, just like anybody else. It's virtually impossible to find punk bands like Sex Pistols or The Clash were. But there are still punk bads, and now punk has evolved to include Ska, Emo, Pogo-punk. That takes nothing away from the beauty of the punk genre.
Jeff, go buy Album:Generic Flipper at your local used bin (there's usually at least 30 copies returned by Nirvana fans who bought them under the influence of Kurt's t-shirt). these guys had some of the most meaningful songs ever. they also had some of the most retarded ones too, cheifly: the game's got a price, brainwash, sex bomb. don't buy the new ones though, flipper died when Will shatter died.
or in layman's terms:
buy: Album: Generic Flipper, Blowin' Chunks live, Gone Fishin' (vinyl only so far), Public Flipper LTD. (vinyl only so far, live 2 record set that unfolds into a board game called flipper across america), Sex bomb baby (out of print)
don't buy: Nurenburg Fish Trials, American Grafishy
some interesting facts:
PiL rips off flipper bad
Will Shatter was the catalyst for Jello Biafra to get into music, Bruce Loose was the priest at Jello's wedding, the band at the reception was a mix of Black Flag and Flipper, and finally Steve Depace (the drummer and most hated man in punk) help with the DK lawsuit against jello
They were probably the prime influence for Nirvana and the Melvins' sound
Moby was Flipper's lead singer for 2 weeks.
and finally, to quote mudhoney's mark arm, flipper are the complete opposite of Minor Threat in every imaginable way.
