At the point he was with Orochimaru? Probably not. He had the basics, and with sharingan he can see the movements of a master like Orochimaru then just practice them repeatedly with stuff like sword and speed until he has it down. Application of said skills can then be handled through sparing sessions.

Kirin's the only one of those who required creative leaps, really.

I can see him sometimes get annoyed if he thinks he isn't progressive fast enough, but I don't see him getting truly frustrated since between part 1 and 2, he didn't do anything radically different than he had before.

Though with his eye jutsu it was a bit different- they were new, and he clearly needed practice with the Susano'o to use it properly, and he also got better with amaterasu, learning to shape it. Which might in part be why he overused 'em- he felt he was getting better and he'd naturally want to continue to do so to get stronger like he's always done.

Meh, Sasuke's a genius anyway, and he's always picked up stuff easily. Kishimoto has said it himself I think. Or it was Kakashi.

Kishimoto did said watching him train would boring and very consistent in rate, unlike Naruto who's get stuck, then make great leaps, then progress slowly... variable rate in other words.

That however doesn't mean that he doesn't train. As you said it yourself, fine-tuning. That would be even more boring to read than a regular Sasuke training arc.
We never got to read Sasuke training with Kakashi right? Or Hinata training with Hiashi. Or Gaara training to perfect his Sand jutsu in Part 1 (after his battle with Naruto).
That sort of stuff is reserved for Naruto only.

Yea, pretty much.

And there wasn't much for him to do during the time-skip but train.

But only Naruto was referred to as being it, though. You can put your own opinion/spin on things, and you'd probably be right, but only Naruto was said to be that person that appears once a generation.

When was Naruto said to be a genius that appears once in a generation? I know he's a genius in his own right, but I don't remember him being called a genius that appears once in a generation. Jiraiya said that there hasn't been a genius like that since Minato.

You can disagree, but Naruto trained himself on the border of death, the whole time, as he could have turned into a stone frog the whole time.

He was also beaten senselessly to prevent this from happening.

Stone Frog? Hmm, border of death then it was. Still doesn't change the fact that his acquisition of Perfect Sage mode in such a short time, was absurd. Kishi should have made Naruto start training for Sage mode a lot sooner.

I don't think he'd be beaten to death though. Even Fukusaku wouldn't do that.

He did.

That's regular Kage Bunshin no jutsu, not Tajuu Kage Bunshin no jutsu. Granted, it's still dangerous, but not nearly as dangerous as it would have been had he trained with Tajuu Kage Bunshin no Jutsu.

Speaking of Kage Bunshin no Jutsu, Naruto couldn't make a normal Bunshin, but after reading a scroll, he progressed to being able to use the Kage Bunshin, in huge numbers as well, because of his chakra level.
First signs of genius? Most definitely. An ass-pulled power-up? Given that it was done in a night, probably 😛.

2. Yup. Pretty much.

1. Only because he met and briefly fought Sasuke 313

2. Not for Rasenshuriken though. He trained, but I don't think it was to the extreme it was when he trained to master Rasengan or Fuuton Rasengan.
He also tried to keep it discreet iirc. Hard to be discreet if you are going all out.

He had no sword skills before he went to Orochimaru. Using a sword is different from using a kunai.
Come to think of it, we've never really seen Orochimaru use swordplay, all he does is barf the sword, and extend or telekinetically control it. I guess you are correct when you say that he used the Sharingan to memorize Orochimaru's movements. Still, was Orochimaru even a sword master 😛?

Practice and sparring counts as training though.

True.
It was also a masterful application of his Chidori variants. He had to perfect shape manipulation with his Chidori first, because even he's not stupid enough to leap from a Chidori to a Lightning Bolt without some form of understanding.
He'd have to understand how the Raiton jutsus work, before progressing to try and harness the power of a Lightning Bolt.

Indeed. Like I said before, Tsukiyomi, if he still has it, is weak.
He hasn't used an Amaterasu like the one that nearly managed to one-shot the Hachibi. He has however, displayed incredible control of the flames, which was first hinted at when he removed all the flames surrounding Hachibi.
His words "I can't believe I had to protect myself with an Enton," suggest that he had trained to get better with this.

Yeah. Thanks for reminding me of the exact thing. I suppose that's why he decides to show Naruto training towards a power-up, or learning to control a power-up. It's because it's more interesting to watch him.

Yep.

Also, Jiraiya also trained to the brink of death to master sage mode and would have turned into a stone frog otherwise...

Actually yea, just having sharingan gives you more genjutsu resistance than a person with Sakura level chakra control.....

As for Sasuke with Tsukiyomi or not..... It could be Tsukiyomi but also could not be. It's never really said either way. If it is he has four MS techniques already compared to the normal three so he'll probably be the first with a fifth MS move. Though the next databook will confirm if he has it or not.

True, but speaking from personal experience, it's not all that hard to pick up the basics of new weapons, even without a sharingan.

Didn't he used sword work against Hiruzen and the Monkey King summon?

Yeah, Minato was called the genius that occurs once in a generation. Naruto was said to surpass his father and succeed where is father failed.

Naruto also surpassed Jiryaiya. Naruto is the best improvisational fighter in the manga, as well. Sure, he's "book stupid", but he's really smart...n'stuff and he has a nack for S-Rank techniques and above.

I wouldn't even consider the Safe Mode S-rank...it's above as only 2 other people were called sages: Jiraiya and the great ninja sage.

And, there's no way in hell I'm reading all of Naruto again to find where it says he was a genius that occurs once in a generation... 🙁

I do know that it was said in the anime, when Tsunade and Jiraiya are discussing who the next Hokage will be. Maybe it's there in the manga. If not, oh well, what I said applies.

How dare you use japanese to fool me! 😆 Yeah, I just meant shadow clones, not mass shadow clones.

And, also, I was being a smartass with my "yup, pretty much" statement. I never said that every last thing he trained for was near the brink of death. I said almost everytime.

You know I wonder what any Hyuuga would do if they met up with Raikage. Or any Kumo ninja.

Run the hell away... Kumo>Hyuuga.

Never. Hyuuga > All.

Though while Hiashi probably has the self control not to do anything or say anything I wonder if Neji would if he crossed paths with Raikage.

If Neji crossed paths with Raikage, he'd end up wishing he hadn't.

Not really sure. Did you see that in the anime or manga?
Sasuke has shown more mastery than Oro when it comes to pure-swordplay I think, primarily because Orochimaru rarely relies on swordplay.

Normally, yes. Danzou has Sharingan all over his arm though. They aren't eyes anymore, not in the 'truer' sense, i.e. he cannot see through the eyes in his arms. It'd be rather retarded if he could.

If he had Shisui's eye out in the actual fight, then yes, he'd have resistance.

Yeah, I understand.

Hyuugaz are SMALL-TIEM 😛

After Naruto used talk no jutsu on Neji? Nahh, he wouldn't say anything.
He shouldn't say anything as well. Provoking Raikage into a fight isn't something he wants to do.
Besides, I think that it was a different Raikage that ordered Konoha to hand over Hiashi.

I was under the impression that that only applied to him surpassing his father when it came to the Rasengan, and perhaps when it came to being a hero.

I'll give you that he's surpassed Jiraiya, but mostly because of his Sage Mode and Rasengan mastery. Jiraiya still is far better with Toad Summons than Naruto ever was 313.

He's a good improv fighter, though it primarily revolves around Kage Bunshin no Jutsu.
IMO, the best is Shikamaru. He has a knack for being able to use anything in his environment to his advantage. Technically speaking, Shikamaru is "book smart" as well.

To be fair, there should have been a few more sages than that, but yes, I understand this point. There are a few techniques out there that should be beyond S-Rank, but meh, I view S-rank as a rank with indeterminate upper limit potential, i.e. there is no "roof".

IMO, he is one, but so are a lot of others in the same generation.

When Tsunade and Jiraiya are talking just before Jiraiya's departure to fight Pain, Naruto isn't called a genius that appears once in a generation. He's compared to Minato, but that is only in the looks department.

Also, no comment on Naruto learning Kage Bunshin no Jutsu in one night 😛?

No. Cause it wasn't about the rasengan. It was the others, including Kakashi, looking on at Naruto when he showed up to fight Pain. He suprassed both the 4th and Jiraiya.

Now, you can argue that it was only in Sage stuff, and I would agree.

But Shika doesn't improv on the fly. He plans his sh*t out many moves in advance.

IMO, gave Shika sage mode, Rasenshuriken, and Naruto's or Bee's chakra levels, and he'd be the best fighter in the whole series.

Edit - About the Neji thing...

I don't think Neji would be able to do anything. Even if he used the gentle fist to try and disable A, he would get electrocuted...severely.

Spoiler:
naruto fights his yami self so a standstill. bee has a sumo match with some huge bear and hachibi asks bee to help naruto, bee says no since naruto dissed rap and bee says "and he..." buts gets interrupted (probably tied to the theory that bee can tell how strong or courageous a dude is by bro pounding)

we later find out that the fight was kinda like a genjutsu sort of thing, and that guy motoi tells some of the story of bee and his bijuu experience.

next chapter is a bee/raikage origin type thing woot!

Hell yeah. More Raikage/Bee = Willing to put up w/ whatever BS Naruto will be doing in this arc.

Not really. Yamato said 'You' when he mentioned the Hyuuga thing when they met up with Raikage. And it wasn't really that long ago since it was a kid Hinata they were trying to kidnap.

^ kishi was making up some of the story as he went along imo, there are a lot of plot holes credited to that possibility.

i was watching the naruto/neji fight just yesterday for some strange reason, and the flashback of the deal had i believe the raikage present (hiruzen was there) but bathed in shadow. he wasn't as big as we know he is, if that was indeed him

Improvising strategically is better than just improvising on the fly if you ask me, especially when you have the strategic expertise that Shikamaru does. He also plans out different outcomes for each of his steps.

I agree though, Naruto's an excellent improv fighter.
I particularly liked how he "improvised" against Kiba...

True this. Toss in the Byakugan as well, as doujutsu are the ultimate hax in Naruto-verse.

Sharingan gets too much lovin' by Kishi.

She was about 3. Neji was 4 when he got his curse seal, and I believe Hizashi sacrificed himself soon after.
(You should remember this since it was the time when Neji realized he had the hots for Hinata 😛)

Which means that it was around 13 years ago. Fairly long time ago. Just three years after Minato died.

Anyway, the "You" could have referred to Kumogakure as a whole, after all, Neji says that the Cloud Country made the demand.

~ If the spoiler on next week's chapter is true, we'll likely see when A became Raikage.
