Sasuke without his sharingan was still stronger than the majority of his peers during the earlier stages of the manga. Only ones he might be weaker than is Shino and maybe Shikamaru and Kiba, which that's a large maybe.
I fully agree. Shiki only because of his haxor Jutsu that even pwned Temari. Shino is an easy victory over just about anyone. I'm not too sure about Kiba...but could Sasuke have beaten Kiba before his Kakashi training? I dunno: Kiba was pretty devastating.

Being top of class, while impressive, is actually just a title.
Yeah, that was more my point. It's an academic achievement: not a combat prowess achievement. I think the missions completed and the levels completed are more indicative of combat prowess.

After all the valedictorian of a high school is not always the smartest student.
In my case it, was. 😉

However, being top of class certainly indicates skill to a degree and Sasuke did show a lot of skill in comparison to his peers.
We agree there, too.

And Naruto lucked out on discovering his perfect move which is what made him so skilled. That and having more chakra than all the others combined might help.
It's pretty hard to beat down a kid that has super fast healing, almost unlimited chakra, and can spam fully capable copies of himself.

Those guesses are all S rank shinobi and considerably stronger than their peers.
lol. I know. 🙁

Uzumaki and Senju chakra is practically kekkei genkai level 🙂 Uchiha chakra is 'merely' fairly strong.
I agree. Particularly for the Uzumaki because they could live a really long time, or something.

I'd say their physical abilities tended to quite impress as well. Sasuke was able to physically stop the demon brothers, and convince Kakashi to put down his book to fight.
I don't think Sasuke sucked. He was a really good ninja. But that came out of his many many many hard hours of training with the occasional advice and tutelage form one the strongest shinobis in all of the series: Itachi. It's a safe bet that he would end up being strong, no matter his background, with that much effort. He was "Naruto" in the the "hard training" department before Naruto was.
Take a look at Neji: the favorite to win the whole Chuunin exams thing. But what did he do? He practiced his balls off and become one of the most powerful gennin out of all the nations. I'd say that before Sasuke's special training with Kakashi, Neji would have clobbered Sasuke. Agreed?

Of course, there's more to how strong a clan is than chakra. Training mentality matters a lot, and the Uchiha seemed to be pretty good at making good ninja. The sharingan was their pride, but they trained their members up to the point where they could do well until their awakened it.
I'm not sure what you're referring to. I thought the sharingan wasn't a "sure" thing for many of the Uchiha? They were good because of their combat hunger and sharingan, from what the "flash back" on the Senju/Uchiha tale told us.

Ino could take over people's minds as a cadet.
Really? I don't remember that. I thought she constantly did that. Wait, you said "cadet" no "gennin."

Don't overlook how impressive that jutsu is. It was easily the best bit of ninjutsu any of the rookies knew until Naruto gained his shadow-clones.
It is definitely impressive: she was integral into taking out a solid S-Class ninja in a 6-tailed demon cloak form.

Sasuke's easily the best combat ninja of the nine, but Ino is the best spy.
I'd say that "spy" award goes to Shino. His bugs pretty much win any type of spy contest.
