Ben Grimm grew up on Yancy street, fighting in gangs and all that...his big brother, a gang leader was killed when Ben was still just a kid. Then he was trained in the military (in a non-continuity mini-series, Ben Grimm and "Logan" worked as partners). Consequently, in the military he became a phenomenal tets pilot. Before ever becoming the Thing, Ben Grimm was already a very formidable fighter; thats why, when he lost his powers, he remained with FF just fighting fools with guns and his fists. I was never trying to say it was crap writing when Colossus held his own against Juggernaut! I was just saying his own X-Men writers know how to write his character. Thats why it was very befitting for Colossus to do as well as he did, he is a very determined hero. But the Thing is determined to another degree...thats why when he fought Champion, he kept going until it would kill him. He knew if he lost the Earth was Doomed, so he fighting til the death.
Like i said earlier, when Thing fought Occulus, who was more powerful than the Silver Surfer at the time, Occulus covered himself in a field covered with razor sharp energy spikes. Even though it was cutting his fists, the Thing kept going. The Thing is also highly resourceful. He fought the Avengers in the Avenger's mansion in FF volume 3 #27...he immediately started using their own facilities and powers against them. He fights them for a few panels, then u see wonderman get knocked through the whole mansion and Thing coming out and no Avengers following him. Instead of fighting Capt America, they decide to call a truce. There are tons of examples of the Thing taking on teams of people and using a strategy to beat them. Thing was the leader of the FF for a term, he is actually a really good strategist. And although he appears to be big and bulky, he has not lost any flexibilty or coordination from his increased volume, it explicitly says it in his bios...
