I don't think it's so much a matter of why or why not, but more about what the people WANT instead of what it SHOULD be. It's pressure from a society that is generally against gay marriage that's pushing this whole issue, and whether that's a good or bad thing is up to the individual.

Anyway, as I say, Bush is simply conforming to his religious values in keeping marriage man/woman only. He is not moving against gay PARTNERSHIPS- just gay 'marriage'. It is a very low level form of discrimination.

That is exactly what this is all about "politics"! Conservative Christians voters just like senior citizens have the majority in voting in the USA. When it comes to politicians they will always seek the majority. As matter of fact Bush don't need votes, he is already expected to run for 2nd turn.
Oh and Raz....if you don't wanna believe that the environment a person grows up in has a HUGE effect on their being. (sexual preferences, likes, dislikes, fashion sense, food preferences....almost anything)
Then my dear friend you need to:
1. Look at the mirror when you point out denial
2. Take a Human Psychology class (or another one...assuming you already have)

Not at all. But, first of all, it is wrong to try and make out that Bush is rabidly banning gay partnership. As I said earlier, for a right-wing Christian Republican his anti-gay rhetoric is extremely mild.
Secondly, throughout the whole of the civil rights movement, from woman's sufferage to black right to gay rights, every victory has had to be won in small steps. I think if it fair to concede that trying to immediately equivocate gay and straight marriages is premature- there would be too much public resistance.
First the idea that gay partnerships can be legally recognised should be allowed to settle. Then, when people work out that the only difference between that and marriage is the name, going all the way will be easier.
