The Bible

You know, don't overestimate that "proving" stuff. I mean proving something comes from a system called science. That system is limited, it only works through empirical research. And the outcome of empirical research is ALWAYS subject to interpretation. More in-depth research often leads to less understanding, but it does gather knowlegde. I once talked to scientist who was really deep into brain research and he told that the more they reserach and test and try to prove, they find out new things that makes one throw out all conclusions of the past.
So proving in the scientific way is not a way to truth, it helps in gathering knowledge but not necessarily in gaining understanding or proving hypotheses...

Wind, i don't understand your logic with the what you see is not always to be believed logic, because at no point did I ever say that seeing something is proving something. The world has been PROVED to be round....not flat. Otherwise I would not know what to believe.

What I was trying to point out is that the greatest thinkers, genius, scientist, of the ancient world believed that the Earth was flat. And they were mistaken the Earth is round (Yes! I heard that line from Friends). So you see we can't always trust EVERTHING our senses dictate. It comes down to a matter of faith. I can't prove Faith exist, but is out there inside of people. You have faith, you might find God. Or take the hard road...use Philosophy and Theology to find God.

So by that logic, you can't disprove the existance of a childs imaginary friend. But I guess that goes hand in hand with religion because that's all God is, a hugely popular and widly accepted imaginary friend.

I find it ironic that people get thrown in a loony bin for talking to imaginary friends. But by talking to the popular and accepted imaginary friend you can become a priest and work in a chuch for some good money. Hmmm...but now that I think about it, a church doesn't seem to be much different from a nut house. Both have a bunch of people talking to invisible people, both have people afraid of something that probably doesn't even exist. And, most of all, both are filled with people who are judging everyone who is different from them.

then you need to brush up on your knowledge of greek scientists

Thanks BackFire. I was trying to write up a comment to reply to queeq's post, but it's so ass backwards in logic that I found myself having a hard time to come up with a reply before lunch.

You've managed to sum up everything I could say about the matter with that analogy.

The Greek Philosophers appeal more to me. 😉

Are they? You seem well up to date with psychiatric policy these days. 🙄

i say fact because i believe in god(i'm luthern but i don't go to church)...but i have thought about it being fiction, this might also be true but i can't talk shit because i never read it so i know my place in this thread...i'm sure there is evidence in this world that might or could show possible truths in these stories, but ppl have said these stories more likely like a lot if things can be misinterpreted

That's fairly limited though. There is room for looking at it, but not endlessly that you can make anything out of it what you want.

this thread however continues along the way of proving whether there is a god or not... A non-debate. The issue was not in proving whether God exists, but if the Bible contains fact or fiction. But few people (especially the antagonists) are limited in their knowledge about the topic but extremely fervent in their opinions. And that's too bad.

i believe in god but the bible doesnt have to be true.... i mean it is but it still doesnt have to be....according to alot of things the bible is just a bunch of storys written by followers of jesus and maybe even jesus himself...and staorys always seem to twist some things so i say its storys based on the truth not fact or fiction... but both

Sounds almost like reading the newspaper...

those hardcore people just deny the fact those ever lived 😉

I don't go to church man, even when I do, I don't listen 😛

heh heh heh sorry

Jury> That is what I thought. How do you KNOW you’re one of Gods chosen? Has he told you so?

BF> Well, it brings me back to what I term culturally accepted delusions. You do not, as you point out, get thrown in the loony bin for believing in deities or even aliens these days. Our culture simply accepts certain delusions – and not others.
If you ask for proof, the “believers” won’t be able to offer any to you, and get into this logic fallacy of requiring you to DISPROVE their deity – unfortunately you cannot prove a negative (If anyone can’t figure out why this is so, I’ll be more than happy to talk about flying reindeer again).

So, if we define “fact” as meaning everything is the Bible is fact, then it is fiction. There are plenty of faulty translations, contradictions, injustice, absurdity, cruelty, intolerance, insults to women, false prophecies, sex, foul language and homosexuality to make it X-rated. And it’s being read to kids.

HAHAHAHA

If the Bible were to talk about everything that ever was... man, you'd get an endless. It's not giving you ALL the answers, only what the writers considered relevant.
one good reason they didnt know of the existence of many things

In mocking yerssot you hit on a relevant topic.

In ancient greece science and philosophy were interrelated: in places interdependent. Even when they were separate - philosophies methods defined they way the Grecians viewed science and the scientific techniques they used were often based on philosophical methodology.

It's something we in the west lost touch with - till recently we began to rediscover the idea of a scientific "fact" having a philosophical leaning. (via quantum physics.)

We make way too much of a distinction between science being based on fact and philosophy being the province of the mind. IMO: One of the reasons why the west is becoming less spiritual.
