The Official Symbiote Thread

Does the Spider-Carnage story cover any issues other than SEN #3, ASM #410, S-M #67, and SPEC #233?

Koto, your She-Venom issue eight is intense. I love the ferocity of Malice. Her confidence is in sharp contrast to Naomi's distress.
I feel like Naomi's problems, her violence and her attempt to seduce Eddie, could just as easily originate with her as with the symbiote. She's been a victom and has no sexual history, that I know of, that wasn't abuse. It would be a normal reaction to pursue a "safe" male figure and to lash out at men who echo her abusers' behaviors. Destructive, but normal.
Seems like Naomi is losing control of both herself and her sym, and understands neither. Accepts neither.
Seems like Eddie should get off his butt and use some of his old reporter skills to keep close to Naomi. He should be able to see she's falling; it makes me want to shake him.
I'm not asking for spoilers or suggesting any direction; I'm just sharing how many strong responses I had to this issue and how it just got my mind ticking away. Fantastic. Thank for another interesting adventure.
Anyone who hasn't read Koto's She-Venom fan fic, or hasn't been able to get into it, check out issue eight.

I agree totally

You make a lot of interesting insights Red, you pretty much picked up on a lot of the different developmental aspects of the character. She's very much in a transitional phase right now, so to speak. Naomi is at the point now where she has gotten at least accustomed to the symbiote, but doesn't know if she really wants it. Trust me when I say, she still has a lot of emotional stuff to go through at this point.

And Eddie is not quite as aloof as he seems, regarding Naomi or the symbiote. I was sort of hinting at that with the whole 'geezer' remark he made about himself. He understands a lot of the stresses that Naomi is currently going through, but he's reluctant to be the one to guide her out of it. As it stands, Eddie himself is not quite sure about himself. That sort of fits into reason why he gave up the symbiote in the first place. Though Naomi may consider him to be her mentor, he doesn't necessarily feel he's the right person for the job. More on that will be come obvious in the next few issues. Keep reading!

The author gives that as one of their functions- but his concept is more expansive than that. He says they were organic self-replicable constructs designed to aid their creators in space exploration. Living spacesuits for a mysterious, now extinct intelligent species.

ahh yes i remeber seeign that a while back when looking for venom fanfictions they had certain reasons such as two minds would stop claustrophobia it coudl adapt and ocudl also make you invisible sort of like a living stealth cameo it was very intruging ......

Yes, and now I'm thinking- we know that the species as a whole (PlanetOTSym) operates parasitically now rather than symbiotically. This break with their past would be explained perhaps by the trauma of a civil war between two factions of colonists, as the essay postulates. The author felt that perhaps the V Sym was the only survivor, as this was written before Planet. Now we know that a large number survived. If the war was not so devastating that it lead to planetary destruction, then how did it end and why did the original hosts vanish?
It seems obvious, it was neither faction of colonists that won the war. It was the Symbiotes. Their high casualties motivated them to take control from their warring hosts.
Could the V sym be a hold-out that resisted this betrayal? Why then, would it not remember this- it identifies itself as a "mutation" rather than an atavism. I like this idea: the setting it was originally found in resembled a lab. The V sym was a prisoner of a hive-like species, a species originally designed and used as the all-purpose tools of their creators. The newly free species of the Syms would have NO concept of "individual rights." They would have experimented on the V Sym and some procedures could have caused memory loss. Maybe they were even intended to.

Anyway, that will all be in my fanfic if its ever done. I think I've mentioned before that I have created two twin children who have been bonded to one shared sym from the moment of their conception. They will be the most extreme example, but in my sym world, there are increasing numbers of syms and increasing problems among all hosts of holding onto their own identities among the constant exchanges of information from sym to sym. Some, like Venom become withdrawn and hostile towards others of their kind. That's the way both Eddie and the V sym would prefer to deal with things. However, they'll find it impossible to stand on the sidelines of this changing world and will have to get involved- motivated, of course, by their desire to protect innocents...
Could there be other atavists among the species? It would be so cool to see some of them arrive on Earth and offer a gift of its "memories" to the V sym. If it had contact with any other atavistic syms before its imprisonment, surely it would have passed its knowledge.
I really want to explore the concept of memories shared through syms, the identity issues that arise from this, and the idea of Eddie's sym recovering some of its past. I'd like to explore how the boundaries between self and other would be eroded by shared memories- not just between host and sym, but between two hosts whose syms have exchanged information or are closely linked...
What kind of extreme acts would you perform to differentiate yourself, if you felt you were becoming part of another person? Could you learn to live like that?

The proper term is symbiont, however, symbiote is used because of an error on the part of Marvel (typo). Remember, this was in the '80s, they (society) didn't know better.

Just discovered something harking back to the discussion of the proper usage of symbiote or symbiont.

I was reading the Starship Troopers novel today, and Robert Heinlein use the spelling symbiote, and that book dates back to 1958. So clearly the spelling was in use prior to Marvel's use of it. Just thought that might interest some people.

look in Websters Diciotnary. it says that Symbiote can be used as an adjective or noun. so can Symbiont. so it doesnt matter if you use Symbiote or Symbiont, because can be used either way.

cool

So, goody that means everyone was right, and I KNOW how important that it is to most of you...I will continue not to deviate from my use of the terms "symbiote" and "symbiotic" which perfectly decribe the contexts in which they are used by myself.

Is it just my comic shops, or was Venom #18 not released on the 25th?

No, the date got switched September 8th. I know, I was looking for it too.

For the love of god, somebody get this man a spell check.

hey i can spell you know

I can read "Fox" just fine. My theory: just like doing word puzzles and crosswords, Fox's posts stimulate our language centers and make us smarter. So, let's all give Fox a big hand: lcap, palc, clpa...

I just find it annoying because he can't get my name right, even though it's right there on the screen.

-not to mention that last post of his was an english teacher's nightmare.

(Gasp!) Somebody else noticed!!! This is pissing me off--you can't get one, either? I think if I don't see anything by next Wednesday on a shelf or at least on somebody's shipping list, I'm gonna have to try to amend this atrocity. My reward for reading this comic is to be denied the last issue? I think not.

lol ive been waiting for it to come out just so i can order the whole Twist arc at the same time
