Hey, I would take it just for the health boost and the money I'd save never having to do laundry again.
I was thinking about the way symbiotes acquire powers from their hosts, and I wonder whether they also acquire any weaknesses that might go along with their host's powers.
Say a symbiote bonded to a mutant with a vulnerability to extreme cold. In additon to acquiring his/her powers, would the symbiote also pick up the weakness to cold?
I'm torn on the issue. One part of me thinks a symbiote is powerful enough to take on only certain parts of it's host's traits, and the other says it's all part of the same DNA.
Ultimately the agruement depends on how one views the symbiote's physiology as working. I'm undecided on this; how does everyone else feel this would work?
Venom says somewhere that he is a mutation... I wish I could find that essay I read online. It was written before POTS and the main arguement was the symbiotes seem to be able to do many things that seem too convenient to have evolved naturally and suggests that they were genetically engineered by some other alien species for the sake of being both living libraries of knowledge from previous generations and for the sake of conquest and colonization in space. That the symbiote was either the partners or enslaved by the host. Then the author argues there may have been war or the symbiotes may have rebelled and Venom may have been one of the few survivors (again written before POTS). The author suggests that the Venom symbiote may actually be an adavism rather than a mutation.
What's interesting is that it sounds like David Way used this very plot in the new Venom series (as explained in Venom #16). Some other force (I'll call them the Forerunners, to use a Halo reference) is hinted at to have created both the symbiotes and a legion of A.I. spider-robots (i.e. the Suit and Bob) and that together they would wipe out pestulant species before they had the opportunity to begin colonizing other worlds (and become a galactic threat). The Forerunners used the legions of symbiotes to destroy these worlds (and perhaps the spider-robots to rebuild it to fit the Forerunners purposes?) Naturally humans were on top of the list but "The Flood never came" because, according to The Suit, the spider-robots found out that the Forerunners intended to save some of the human population so that they would worship the Forerunners like gods and that the spider-robots? and symbiotes? would not participate in "Religious persecution."
I assume you're talking about the article at
http://members.aol.com/SpookMango/symbiote.htm
I agree that this is the most likely origin for the symbiotes.
As for the revelations the from the Spider-oids in Venom 16, I tend to disregard that because it conflicts so much of what was previously established about the symbiotes.
There's also te possibility that the suit was lying, and that the symbiotes and the spiders are enemies. The suit wanted to Patrica to destroy Venom for it, so it made him out to be the bad guy.
This all leads me to think that symbiotes and the spider robots were both created for terraforming/colonization aid. The spider's purpose is to reformatt a hostile world to their creators specifications. One must wonder whether or not they're still under their master's control, if that race still exsists, or if they're just Von Nueman machines spreading out of control.
The symbiotes are to aid colonists on "friendly" worlds or planets already rebuild by the spiders. The two come into opposition because they have different definitions of "hostile" and "friendly" worlds.
Re: Earth is friendly accrondingly to the symbiotes, but hostile to the spiders. (Or vice versa).
Or perhaps they're ment to be 2 methods to the same ends, and that they're spreading across universe trying to prove to their creators that they're best. Of course attacking and sabotaging each other's efforts is not unthinkable. Hell, they might be having full-scale military confrontations somewhere out there.
Then there's the puzzle of where the Xenophages fit in.
Yeah, that's the article.
Good points all and yes, anything the Suit says should be taken with a grain of salt considering he's trying to manipulate Robertson to his own purposes.
As for the Xenophages do you think they are just opportunistic predators (the one in Venom: The Hunted didn't seem to care whether symbiote or skateboarder was on the menu as long as it was eating something) or were they also engineered (specifically by the Forerunners, the Spider-robots, or one of the "pestulant species"?) to specifically take down symbiotes (if they are oportunistic, they travel a long way just to snack on symbiotes, it's not very convenient.) Or maybe they can eat just about anything but prefer the taste of symbiote?
Thank you for your opinion. But I'd have to say Man-Squid is worse.
PS. How do you do sarcasm tags?

Man-Squid?? You mean Ock???
Pffftttttt only the BEST of the villains make it to the movies 😈
And I need no sarcasm tags to say that 😮💨
And Carnage is waaaaaaaay better than Venom. He's just raw insanity.
No, there was a "villan" called Man-Squid who Spidey stopped from robbing a bank. His power was to shoot ink. Spidey even told him out loud how lame he was.
Now let's put scropionlord's post behind us and go back to real symbiote discussion.
Symbiotica, you're a big fan of the recent Venom series. What do you feel is the realtionship between the symbiotes and the robot spiders?

If memory serves, the nanobots/aliens were split on whether or not to obliterate mankind; some of them wanted to use symbiotes to destroy all life on earth and then "terraform" it or whatever ["Bob" and his army of female clones], and some of them wanted to stop them from doing that [the Suit].
The "bad" aliens were the ones funding the research into cloning Venom's tongue? I'm rusty on all this. 😈 As such the clone symbiote was a biological weapon, the first of many the nanobot/aliens were planning. This is an old premise; IIRC it was used by the original writers of the "Alien" film, that the eggs on the Derelict on LV-426 were actually biological weapons that got out of hand and destroyed their handlers [as seen by the greatest sci-fi tease of all time, the "Space Jockey" the crew of the Nostromo found welded to his chair, with his chest blown out. And where was the rest of the crew? We never found out.]
I miss that series, I really do. It had many great moments, and the symbiote jumping from host to host [no matter how improbable the host!] was hilarious. I'd even put up with looking at Wolverine again, if we could only get it back. It was instrumental in getting me seriously interested in symbiosis, and interested in Venom in general.
Im my opinion the symbiotes have as much potential as the xenomporphs in being able to hold our attention long-term. These are extremely interesting life-forms we know almost nothing about. PLus their interactions with the host add more interest. The xenomorphs kill their hosts - the symbiotes interact with them on a long-term basis. They have differing effects. Fleshing that out would lead to endless hours of fun for everyone onscreen.
But in reference to the article above, I don't see the symbiotes as being involved with space-exploration any more than I do xenomorphs. Nothing that nasty, that hostile is interested in helping its handlers out or cooperating in any endeavor whatsoever! Use as weapons makes a lot more logical sense IMO... and even then, they can barely be controlled.

What in the flaming Hell are you on about?! Are you insane? I am honestly beginning to wonder.
You've just handed me a very big stick to beat you with, should I have chosen to use it. I'm not going to do that, but I could. Others here will use it without compunction if they get the chance. Huge mistake on your part.
[sigh] I can see I've really struck a nerve here....
Listen up, bub: I suggest growing a thicker skin OR keeping your business to yourself, or you're doomed out here. Doomed.
Well, maybe I'll beat you a little with that stick you handed me. This is thinking that is going to lead you to a life of misery.
am sorry if that hurts your feelings
I totally think you're on another planet from almost everyone in this thread. You do not have a single clue what we're telling you. I give up. Hopeless. You are so clueless that you fail to grasp that I have yet to "attack" you. Geez Louise... enough already.
Oh dear God, once again with this crap, this is the 4th time today I've read the same post by this idiot! This has no friggin bearing to what people were talking about. You're pathetic, I swear. But anyway, somebody fill me in, I've been wondering what's going on with Venom for the past 4 years. I hear he got the power cosmic? How'd that work out? And Carnage, whatever happened to him? Please fill me in.
