Yea, I even noticed that he had little cuffs or womrhting on his hands, awesome.

Hey Oswald, who you trying to kid? These DVD's have been in production for MONTHS...the covers and disc images were leaked MONTHS ago, i pre-ordered my set MONTHS ago. You mean to tell me they didnt have time to make that set perfect? Oh and you actually concede that these discs were rushed out. Thanks for making my point again!!!! Please...do you have an article from USA Today for me? No i didnt think so. Oh and i suggest you get your eyes tested immeadiately

That look blue to you? Even Mephisto concedes that point albeit he's not fussed; i am. At the end of the day Oswald, you haven't provided any sort of convincing argument as to why Lucasfilm should feel entitled to put out something that obviously was never finished properly. It's all very well saying there'll be an ultimate edition but it begs the question, why didnt he just wait till then? Saying that, there'd be even more prequel tie in crap in there, so i'll give that one a miss thanks. My anger comes not from a hatred of Lucas but from the fact i've waited so long for these films and the people at Lucasfilm obviously couldn't care less. If i made a half assed mistake at work, i'd get my arse kicked. Why should it not be the same for George Lucas or his people? End of the day if this were say a re-release of a none lucas movie you loved and there was a glaringly obvious mistake in it, you'd be all over it too.

Oh and let me reitterate. if it weren't for some of the sabre effects and the lack of decent commentary on ANH and ROTJ i'd be a thoroughly happy chap.

That's all I wanted to hear. You sounded like you'd never be happy. But I still say whining about it for so long is pointless. I just thought you should have expected it. I mean they did it while working on ROTS, you know how busy they are. Something was bound to get screwed up. While I wish they had caught it, I'm realistic about what happens when things are rushed. And you could tell they where rushed if you followed it. You said they had all the time in the world, but they didn't because they rushed it, which it looks like you've now conceeded. Its a shame they did, and it does suck, but that's the reality of it. I still think they're phenomenal other than that tiny tiny bit of oversaturation. I'm glad I have them. Anyway, back to the DVD's.

I heard the ANH commentary last night and now I understand a lot of complaints on here....will somebody please tell Ben Burtt to shut the hell up? Christ, the only people on there I really wanted to hear was Lucas and Fisher. Lucas' commentary I liked (though it basically re-hashed the docs on disc 4) but it was interesting at times, I liked hearing about how he approaches stories and how he stopped the cleaning crew from polishing the falcon's floor on set. Dennis Muren made some interesting points and didn't talk too much. But Burtt! Holy crap he's just not that interesting. The lightsabers, ok. But every clank and engine whine he felt the need to explain. I got a twitch afterword for about an hour, every noise I heard in my apartment I expected to hear Burtt start explaining! It was terrible. I'm gonna listen to ESB in a couple hours. I hear that one's good.

Oh my god! The DVDs have been in production for MONTHS! Considering it takes ILM YEARS to create and add special effects to an average film, I think the quality of their work on the DVDs is incredible considering the amount of time they had and the difficulty of trying to seamlessly work new effects into a 30 year old film. You want a convincing argument as to why Lucasfilm is entitled to release an unfinished boxset? Well, Lucasfilm owns the film and is entitled to release it in any way it sees fit. Lucasfilm has made a tremendous amount of money on this "unfinished work." Why should Lucas care about your opinion? Tell me, who are you in the grand scheme of things? And you're ANGRY at Lucasfilm over this DVD boxset? You, my friend, need some counselling. Or perhpas a long letter to George Lucas himself is in order. Since you can do film restoration and DVD creation so much better than his current team, he'd be a fool not to pay you well.

Look, the "green" lightsaber wasn't ILM's fault so let's stop gettin' on them for it. The retoration company adjusted the color saturations. ILM put in the fixed effects, new scenes, Skywalker sound added the new Boba dialogue, and then it went to the restoration crew. ILM did a good job fixing things up effects-wise. They didn't have anything to do with the clean up and resoration of the film itself. So the "green" saber had nothing to do with them. I just thought that needed some claification since ILM takes the heat for any visual mistake, even the ones they had nothing to do with.

And, upon closer inspection, I'm not sure they re-rotoed Obi-wan and Vader's saber's in ANH. If they did, it was only in the close ups because in other shots it still looks too long and sometimes the color is brighter, but it doesn't always look re-done. I was under the impression they were going to make all the lightsaber blades look as they did in AOTC. I guess they're going to wait for the Archival editions. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at the shots where Obi-wan strikes in a circle, his saber pointing directly at the camera with Vader's back to the camera. It still looks like a thin fiber optic wire, like it did before. But they upped the blue around it so it's less noticeable. But it's certainly not re-rotoed.

They did work on the sabres in ANH.

What we need are some answers from the top. The new Boba dialog does seem weird, the tone definently changes the mood of the character. The only line I thought sounded really good was "Put Captain Solo in the cargo hold." I think it just sounds weird to us, so a lot of things will take some getting used to. Future generations it will sound normal to them.

I think I've narrowed it down to what still needs to be done:

1. Lightsaber training scene: It should be blue all the way(when he gets shot in the ass it does look blue there), and it still looks all messy and glitchy (especially near the handle).

2. ANH Audio: The music is mixed way to low is some areas, and some dialog seems muffled. Though I thought vader sounded the best I have ever heard in that movie, and they really pumped up the breathing. Also during the OBI/vader duel they pumped up the hum of the lightsabers which really added some intensity to that fight.

3. Tie fighter boxes: I thought they had fixed this in 1997. I was wrong. The restoration and picture clarity just really brought them out, and they look really distracting and just bad.

4. Vader light saber in ROTJ: Even if it does look kinda pink, some times it looks like it has no glow what so ever and basically doesn't even look like a light saber at all regardless of what color it is.

That is about it some positives worth mentioning (and lord knows we need some in this thread).

The rancor is something I can watch and believe it is real

When the X-wing captain in ANH gets shot down they added a sound when he gets shot

I don't care what people say, I'm glad Ian Mcdarmid is in ESB now.

Luke's light sabers in ESB and ROTJ looked really good

I know they worked on the sabers, they look brighter and sharper in SOME shots but they still weren't all out re-rotoed. Go look at the shot I'm talking about. I know they've been brightened and the color sharpened, but they clearly were not re-rotoed. Re-rotoed would mean they went in and animated cgi blades over the old versions. That's how they do them in the prequels, they animate them on the computer over the poles they use on set. In a few shots it looks like they may have, but if you really look, they weren't done the whole duel through.

I think the questioned is: would you be upset if we got the 1997 editions on dvd instead of what we have now.

You guys (mephisto,prozak, Oswald)

I don't think any of us know what happed, so stop screaming at each other. Stop playing the blame game, we need to find out how to get some answers.

The only things they need to do now are more additions to link them to the prequels.

1. I would like to see the Emperor disbanding the Senate seen added in ANH. It would put Coruscant in the film, and show the final stage of government overhaul, since we get to see every other stage of the Emperor's rise and grip on power. That would be nice to see and it would broaden the scope of the film. It's not neccesary story wise since Tarkin tells you it happened. But I think, for the sake of watching them ALL in order, it would certainly liven things up and help segue into the OT storyline from ROTS better.
2. I would like to see Bail, if only for a few seconds, on a balcony on Alderaan, the Death Star looming like a moon in the sky, before it blows the planet away. We get to see a lot more of him in ROTS and it would be nice to see him again right before he dies, illustrating again how the Empire really is destroying all remnants of the Republic.
3. Re animate ALL OT lightsabers so they look as good as they do in the prequels for visual consistancy.
4. Add the Imperial March SOMEWHERE in ANH. Preferably somewhere on the Death Star. The point where Vader enters the Hanger upon the Falcon's arrival would work well since there's no music right there now. Also maybe add it to the Falcon getting sucked in.
5. Add Anakin's theme very slighly to his death in ROTJ, right after the small, two or three note version of the Imperial March.
6. Put the Emperor's theme in the holo sequence in ESB like we get to hear everytime he's on screen in the PT.

I think these changes would just make the saga more together and seem like one coherent story a little better. It would be a big plus for the next generation watching them in order for the first time. Other than that, they're perfect. The DVD's really hold up against the prequels now. ESB and ROTJ almost look like they were shot with the digital camera of AOTC. The colors are so rich and smooth now. There are lighting effects I've never seen before. It's really enriched them. I felt like I was watching them again for the first time.

Yeah mephisto some of it would be cool. But honestly that will happen if were lucky. I was hoping they were going to update the deathstar plans, and the screen tarkin is watching during the battle. I do agree that with the film restoration they don't look so dated now which is the best part about all of this. They are this close (holds index finger and thumb quarter inche apart) to being perfect and calling them a done deal. And that is why a lot of us are upset because we thought they were going to be, and now we have to wait again.

And you know I was just thinking, we probably got at most a minute worth of shots and sound that need to be fine tuned and were good to go

bored so I'll go and reply to those points

1. don't feel the need for that... for me that phrase was enough
2. he should have done that in the original not now when it's convinient for him to do so
3. well, I gotta say it does highly annoy me that one time the white of the lightsabre in the middle is clearlywhite and in others it has the same color as the shine... within the same scene it can change ten times even! very terrible done on the dvd
4. ah well, ANH has something ...being the only movie in the OT that doesn't have it; gives it more value in ESB
5. I haven't listened to the music lately (had the audio commentaries on constantly) but that might be a good idea to me
6. is there any music on it now?

Oswald, these films have had most of the work done to them already, clearly your knowledge of film production is nothing if not accurate and it certainly isn't accurate. If i interpret your comments about buying my set on Ebay correctly i'd guess you don't own them already so it begs the question as to how qualified you are to comment on a set you don't own and probably havent seen yet. Oh and one more thing, i am proficient with Maya and other animation tools so while i don't work in the movie industry i have a very good idea of what work goes into creating alot of special effects. Those sabres could have been done by interns, infact maybe they were done interns and therein lies the problem. Anyway Oswald, it's time to let the big boys talk.

Mephisto, i don't want to get into a shit slinging contest with you, its apparent that you understand what i mean; you just can't grasp how annoyed i am and why i am that way. I just can't let it go and that probably is because i own the 97 special edition laserdiscs too. I forgave them the mistakes in that release, and i paid an absolute fortune for those discs i might add, but i simply hate the fact that the issues i have with the DVD's could have been rectified easily. It's like a bug on your windshield that won't come off, it doesnt affect the view but its always there getting in the way. You know what i mean?

OB1 - to answer your question, if they'd just released the 97 version on DVD i'd have gone mental. If a green sabre can piss me off this much i'd be a mushroom cloud laying motherfu**er in that case.

As for additions to the OT to tie in with the prequels, well, i can understand why some people want them and some people don't. Personally i'd like only minor changes, very minor at that, but if i were to hear the Imperial March in ANH that would kill me. Not only does that tune make ESB the best, imo, of the series, but it'd spoil that first scene when the Executor appears for the first time shadowing those other Star Destroyers. That would be unforgivable. However, i wouldn't oppose an Alderaan scene, i always gelt it should have been in the movie. If i remember rightly, it was in the comic adaption.

was it really? i have the dark horse reprint somewhere, I gotta go find it then. The bug on the windshield thing is a perfect metaphor for that stuff though. That's how I feel about the musical number in ROTJ. Now that was a pointless addition. Maybe not if it had been done right, like livening up the tune that was already there, but the new guy singing looks like the Honeycombs mascot. I miss that puppet Sly who rocked out with her knee. I thought she was well done. the new music just sounds to earth like.
Yerrsott- yeah, that's the thing, they aren't neccessary to us, I just think it would be nice for the next generation who gets to see 'em in order. I do agree they aren't needed per se. They'd just be nice to have. Interesting point about the Imperial march. The only reason I disagree is because we hear it in AOTC and we'll hear more in ROTS. It is a shared theme of Vader and the Empire, a musical clue that Anakin and the Republic both fall apart and are reborn as something new and sinister. So I think it should be added, at lease subtley. Not like a huge overture as in ESB, but more like how you hear it when Anakin tells Padme what he did to the Tuskens.

oh, yerssot, there is music in the Empreror's scene in ESB now, but its just a couple notes dragged out, more of a tonal thing. I think his theme would certainly up the power of the theme.

ah, gotcha ... thanks 🙂

The whole musical number in ROTJ was overkill, it had no purpose other than to add a scene in order to call it a 'Special Edition'. I didn't mind the sarlacc update though, it was called for. The original pit with spikes seemed very unmenacing, even when i was a kid.
