why are you an atheist?

Oppression and prosecution of the Jewish people is not a new development, or a Christian one. It went on long before the Crusades, and long after. Basically every large empire from Egypt to Pagan Rome has at some time or another looked for a scape goat in the form of an ethnic minority, and it was often sadly the Jews who suffered. The only thing that usually changes is the justification for the persecution.

I don't know about that. I just remember that it was unsucessful. Can you give me a source.
How can you remember if you dont know about it.?

The Exchequer of the Jews. The crown claimed the jewis asset in order to uphold the large income from the taxation of the jews, the burning of jewish houses led to loss in these incoms thus the Exchequer to maintain the incom from the jews who were excellent economics assets to the crown.

I'd have to know how they acted to judge. If a group was annoying, then most early kings would stop them to protect their nation. Religon's one thing, but the safety of your people has to come first, if you're the boss
just like the Romans acted towards the early christians then

That's an army, and a pillaging one at that. They were half mad with hunger and thirst, and had seen too many of their buddies killed. So everyone in Jerusalem was killed. Again, not a focus.
an army acting on the order of the church, christian soldiers, the actions that were taken in jerusalem can never be justified.

in 613 persecution began in Spain. Jews were given the options of either leaving Spain or converting to christianity. Jewish children over 6 years were taken from their parents and given a christian education.

Oppression and prosecution of the Jewish people is not a new development, or a Christian one
it wasnt a new development, but chrisitans have a long list of jewish pesecution, it lasted over a millenia and christians of today either deny it or try to justify it. Just show the hypocracy of the chrisitan church

I certainly don't accept it, as a history student I am well aware of the horrors of the past, and hope to never seen them again, but usually there is more then one reason, one cause for any event, and while religion might often seem to be at the front, it is often not the sole cause. The Crusades were one of the most criminal and irresponsible events ever, and religion, both Christianity and Islam has a lot to answer for, however, a number of the resulting crimes had nothing to do with Church orders, but were largely in part caused by uncontrollable Crusader armies. After all, at various times the Crusaders killed more Christians then Muslims or Jews, sacked and looted Abby's and monasteries before they even left Europe. Constantinople, head of the Byzantine Empire and Greek Orthodox Christianity was eventually besieged and sacked by Crusaders. So more often then not the Church had no control over the armies, and as such the armies did as they wished, based on human urges, rather then what the bible said.

The Vatican never shed a tear about the besieging of Constantinopel, they werent exactly on good terms with the orthedox church

Firstly i apologise if this has been covered. Just joined the forum and it was a lot to read!

If ever asked i say that my religion is catholic becoz my family are. However, I do not fully believe in the bible or the religion. I do believe in a god and in Jesus and thats my extent.

Some said that there was no fact in the bible. If truth be known, there is more fact than fiction. For instance, the clothes of Jesus when he was put into a tomb was found. Wood from the Ark was also discovered and apparently the ark that holds the 10 commandments is located in spain. This that have happened, miracles that have occured (lourdes). Also, most religions follow a similar pattern. Eg catholics and muslims have very similar beliefs.

Also what was mentioned that the bible doesnt make sense. this is becoz the dead scrolls was the origins of the bible. these are not allowed to be read by anyone thats not a holyman. The bible that everyone reads is based on these scrolls and therefore written by man.

I'd like to point out that some people need something to believe in. it gives them hope, companionship when noone is around, and strength to toil through hardship! So no matter the faith, respect the belief.

Unfortuantley, some would argue that more wars are started becoz of religion. This is false. Most beliefs state that killing and war is wrong, catholics should "turn the other cheek". Its men who use religion as a weapon on weak minded people that is the real cause.

And as someone else said here, "i would only believe if i saw". well, you believe in air yet you cannot see it, its there, u feel it push you in a direction. but you can push against the wind and take a different path.
What if god was pushing you to the right path but you went against it and something bad happened? would that be gods fault or yours? It is written, "god gave man free will" so if bad things happen, dont blame God, he is only guiding, you choose to take the path!

Fate or chance? luck or god intervention? whateva you think/believe its your choice.
No such thing as a good man, only good intentions

the Turin shroud aint what jesus wore, there is no way they could ever get to that conclusion that jesus wore those clothes. Not to mention all the carboon dating of it as well that dismiss it as being from that period at all.
Wood from the ark you say, oh brother yet again with this crap.
And the ark aint in Spain some believe that it is in Ethiopia

well the dead see scrolls can be seen in different exhibitions, the new testament is not based on it due to the fact that the scrolls were written before the time of jesus, and no one ever said anything else that the bible is written by man

you can see air, ever experiensed cold weather?

Eg catholics and muslims have very similar beliefs.
😂 yeah tell that to the pope.

the air you see in cold weather i believe is moisture from your breathe, you cannot see air!

You may be right in that the ark is in etheopia, tbh, i researched my religion to be a better believe a while ago so my knowledge is sketchy! But any believer that is a blind believer that they never look into a religion before being e believer isnt a true believer.

The true dead scrolls will never eva been seen!

My point was, people need something to believe in, dont mock them, respect people for being strong enought to show there beliefs (although JW take it a step too far and visit u at home grr!)

The true dead scrolls will never eva been seen!
the secrecy rule was lifted arond 10 years ago, the schrolls are now being prepared for publication by Oxford University press

My point was, people need something to believe in, dont mock them, respect people for being strong enought to show there beliefs
why should one show ones belief, to me that is a sign of weakness in their own faith

the air you see in cold weather i believe is moisture from your breathe, you cannot see air!
still is a moisture condense of the air, point is you can prove air you cant prove god

I recently went to an exhibit here in Australia, Literary treasures of the World, and there was a piece of the Dead Sea scrolls on Display. I personally was more excited seeing Mozart's unfinished Requiem and Darwin's letters....

more excited seeing Mozart's unfinished Requiem
I would have felt the same way

I am an athiest because

Spoiler:
I dont believe in god

I am NOT offended by religious people or the fact that THEY believe in a religion, but I AM offended by the actual concept of a God.
It (the existance of a god) kind of undermines the value of free will, and enforces predeterminisation.

In 1841 Ludwig Feuerbach argued that God was a human invention, a spiritual device to help us deal with our fears and aspirations.

This was bad news, because human beings projected all their good qualities onto God and saw him as compassionate, wise, loving and so on, while they saw themselves as greatly inferior. Thus humanity alienated itself from its true self.

In other words, believing in a god is seperating ones self from the things that make humanity great.

I remember a little, just that food ran out, armies vanished, and it failed. I didn't study it.

Thievery of those old age bastards. Did you know that the king of England imposed a 8d poll tax on everyone in 1380?

No, as the Christians were hunted down and slaughtered wherever they went, tortured, and a load of over stupid things because of the Roman's dislike. The Jews got 81 years to emigrate in 613, and some chose to stay. It's like Saddam saying "OK, my subjects, I'm going to gas any of you that don't go away from my land in the next ten years”. Not perfect, but better than the Romans

I was saying that they weren't acting like Christians, they were acting like soldiers. One of the follies of war is that you have to focus your hate of everything into the enemy (another being that there were looters). The enemy were in the city, and so they were hit with the full force of the soldier's hatred. It wouldn't matter if a saint was in there, he would just be another enemy to take out in revenge for you buddy.

The Christian Church has a long history of persecuting people. You know the phrase "absolute power corrupts absolutely"? It's not true, it's an absence of power you know about that corrupts, as you try and gain it (as the Catholics proved). But then, it hasn't all been hell for people, the Church helped people loads too, arguing for rights, being charitable (like the monasteries in England till the dissolution) and more.

I put all my good qaulities onto mummy, hunger (her cooking skill), untidyness (her cleaning) Boredom (cooche cooche coo) so I am aleenenting miself from my true self.

This both requires the non existence of "mummy", and the non existence of more likely explanations (like that all moms can cook, clean, and play with babies)

Or crappy cooking, half hearted tidying and being fun to play with, if you want something more advanced.

There is no logical indication that God exist. The idea of God simple give man another day to fight and to continue living with HOPE. It's man natural way of easing the hardship of life, by pretending that there is someone up there watching and taking control of everything.

The concept of god should not be taken so literally, it is the representation of the goodness that resides in all people, along with evil (the devil). The choice to 'follow god' is merely the choice to be a good person. That is all.

It is mans' greatest vanity, the creation of god as a physicality. That we were created in the image of some omnipotent being makes us seem above all other forms of life, special, chosen. We were the top of the food chain, hence our place now in ‘consciousness’. We like to think we are special when all we are is a fluke. Evolution.

You could discredit this theory, say how could evolutions foundations of 'the big bang' have some from nothingness. (For one thing, that wasn't necessarily the case. this notion involves another man made concept. time. something without which our feeble minds could not even begin to comprehend existence.) Then how do you prove the existence of your 'god'? You don't have to? You believe in him and that is enough!

How can there be a god when there is so much suffering in the world? Free will! Mans’ choice and his curse. Another easy way out; it's all a little too obvious.

The concept of religion was created to fill the vacuum of the void. That vast nothingness of space that echoed the hollow of mans soul. It was his answer to the question that has plagued the greatest of our thinkers for centuaries and beyond. 'Why are we here?'

It was harnessed then as a tool to control the ignorant masses, and is used today by our world leaders as cause for crusades of redundant morality.

Until the latter part of the 20th centuary, man could only look to the stars and wonder. Now with increasing technology, we're beginning to explore our universe. We no longer have to create our awnsers; we can seek them out ourselves.

Someone asked earlier in this thread, what has evolution to do with religion. EVERYTHING. For evolution to exist would deny the existence of god. If there is evolution, then there was no creation; no creator, no god.

Man needs to stop looking to the sky, putting his fate in the hands of an ancient dream and instead needs to look inward. This planet is dying. Corporations control our politics. We live in the luxury of excess while around the globe, billions starve in disease ridden conditions.

The time has come to stop putting faith god, and into ourselves.

If every human being on this planet forgot about 'god', it would disappear.

oh atheistism is mind boggling, but that something hidden in the sky is a master of all creation with a son who walked on water, raised the dead, cured the blind, resurrected himself from the dead aint

You know, when Jodo Kast posed a question that was similar in having a critical, non-factual basis for his opinion, nobody responded sarcastically to him.

Someone asked earlier in this thread, what has evolution to do with religion. EVERYTHING. For evolution to exist would deny the existence of god. If there is evolution, then there was no creation; no creator, no god.

Actually, Progressive Creationism (Theistic Evolutionism) believes in both God and evolution.

Man needs to stop looking to the sky, putting his fate in the hands of an ancient dream and instead needs to look inward. This planet is dying. Corporations control our politics. We live in the luxury of excess while around the globe, billions starve in disease ridden conditions.

I wish your tone was sarcastic because surely you jest.

Put faith into ourselves? We're a selfish, gluttonous, evil species that preys on the weak and lifts up the strong as those who are superior. We strive for riches and self-satisfaction. Since when did humans start out at the TOP of Maslow's Hierarchy? That's right--we never have been. Putting trust into humans (and our infamous 'human nature'😉 is like giving a toddler a gun.

You explain the gun to him--how the it works, when it should be used, when it needs to be put away, how to safely handle the gun, how to check to see if it is loaded, etc.

Then you have to explain to the court why your son shot and possibly killed himself or another.

Self-actualization works in theory. Only few take that vague dream and make it into reality.

If every human being on this planet forgot about 'god', it would disappear.

This is assuming, of course, that all the Bibles in the world disappeared, all the songs about God and hymns disappeared, and all the literature about God disappeared. I think you'd fit in quite nicely with the folks in Brave New World.
