The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

Yeah, I saw that PC Gamer UK voted it the best PC game of all time, which immediately struck me as weird for two reasons.

1. While I really do enjoy the game despite all the flaws you mentioned above, there are much much better games, especially if they went by games of their time.

2. The game's only been out for about five months, that really doesn't seem like enough time to gage the quality of a game like that, especially too call it the best PC game ever.

Hey Ush, Backfire mentioned that Mod. It's an extremely popular one and easy to find. Just go to a mod site (I could find a couple for you if you don't know any good ones) and do a search for the Obscuros Mod....it stops the scaling and makes it more realistic.

I have quite a few that are fun as hell. The petshop mod (I have a pet panther right now...he's weak at the moment but it's cool as hell) and other stuff that makes it more realistic (like more natural wildlife AI and a living economy system that makes buying and selling more realistic). Also one that makes stealing easier so people aren't "psychics" as you put it. Should this stuff have been fixed from the start? Yeah, probably. But it's available for free for those willing to look.

And it doesn't really detract from the game...they were easy to install and only add to the experience.

As for "Best Game Ever", there's the 'Best for its time' type of award and the 'Actual best ever' award. I'm into RPG's and love the Elder Scrolls series, so I wouldn't object to it being called the best ever (by the 2nd criteria, not the first), but for someone not itno open-ended RPG's it might be a bit of a drag. But I like trekking through forests, and honestly think that the options, AI, quests, and graphics are as good (or better) than any other RPG out there. But that's me...opinions obviously differ.

Right now my only complaint is occasionally heinous load times. And I realize that I've tweaked the original game experience quite a bit with mods, so I'd probably have other criticisms if I hadn't done that, but I think that just makes it more enjoyable for me.

So best ever? It's too subjective a term to really say for sure. In that sense, you're right...it probably doesn't deserve it.

But I still love it. ๐Ÿ™‚

P.S. Game update...I'm only level 3 right now, still kinda newbish, but I'm working through the Mages Guild and own a black panther that I named Guenwyvar (Drizzt reference). My character's class is a custom one, but it pretty closely resembles a Spellsword class. Haven't done anything toward the main quest yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Good times...

ooh, a petshop mod... funny, i was mentioning how Oblivion need Familiars, so i could have a cat-like one, or an owl

Yeah, it's cool. No owl though. But there is a flying imp-thing. And my panther dies too easily right now, which is unfortunate...but they level up with you so eventually he'll be a badass.

i just downloaded a mod for Huge giants, been gettin mods for oblivion most of the day, they have some sword mods but i couldnt find one for the Soul reaver sword from legacy of kain series, its a bad ass sword

Meh, I don't like ones that "take you out of the game world". For example, I saw a downloadable skin-mod for the character "V" from V For Vendetta.

Cool? Yes. But that doesn't exactly blend into Oblivion. Same with the Soul Reaver sword (though I'm sure it's cool). Most of the mods I've installed are intended to help be "believe" the world even more than originally.

heh, i like mods that add items to the game for me to find and quests to do, ive done a lot of the quests and basically all the good ones and am master of most of the guilds but i need more stuff so i download swords

Also i did get a soul reaver sword mod which was exciting but i couldnt find it, does anyone know about it

Problem with mods is, half of them make the game easier.. and if it's anything like Morrowind (ES3) then the mods create a whole lot of problems for the game.

I don't have enough time to play through all the quests that are there already....I'll be lucky to make it through even a couple of guilds and such before school takes over my life. So extra quests aren't really my thing.

And the Obscuros mod actually makes the game harder (from what I've heard and what little I've played). But there's literally hundreds of great mods...it's all about finding the right ones for you. I only have 5-6 but they all do something that I feel is important or cool, and luckily they haven't created compatibility problems with my game. ๐Ÿ™‚

ive found a few awsome swords, especially if your a magic user, the Soul caliber one give you not only great attack power (without being uber unbalanced) but it gives you Soul steal power so that when you kil an enemy your soul stones will fill up and you can recharge your staffs

another brill weapon is the Soul reaver sword, doesnt do very good damage itself but it drains magic away from your enemy, you have to charge it up with varla stones to make it more powerful but when its maximised in power it doesnt do too bad attack power but it gives you A LOT of magic each time you hit, about 50 magic, which IMO is awsome since i got a spell that kills basically anything in one shot and costs about 270 Magicka so in a few hits i can cast it again if i use the reaver, however its a little unbalanced

Awsome mods, i also like the Witchking mods, since i like evil looking things, wearing the Witch Kings armour and helmet and using the one ring is cool, especially when ime using the soul reaver to use my spells almost constantly

Also does anyone know how to get your Magicka levels up, ime level 22 magic user and have 90 odd will power and over 100 intelligence but only have about 240 magicka which is ridiculously low so how am i supposed to get it up permenently, i understand spells can put magicka up but only about another 100 or so points, according to some you should have at least perhaps 800-1000 magicka at some point but how?

Drenton + Apprentice = lot's of mana. Also enchants on your armor.

Oh, and I'd recommend the Kumiko Manor mod. It creates a mansion you can buy for 75000. And I mean a mansion. I haven't seen it yet, but just from the "For Sale" descriptions I read of it in Leyawiin, it seems like it'll be the ultra-sweet 'reward home' the programmers forgot to put into the game originally. My new goal isn't to beat the game, but simply to own that house. *drools*

What race did everybody use when they started?

Redguard... changed it to look British XD

Adrenaline Rush all the way

Red-haired Breton.

Probably not too smart in hindsight. They're more magic-oriented, and my player class is definitely warrior-oriented. But between those two things, and being in the Mage's Guild, my character is relatively well-rounded.

i made a new character... basically a Sith XD
name: Darth Rextyl
sign: The Mage
specialty: combat
2 major stats: intelligence and endurance
7 major skills: acrobatics, blade, block, destruction, illusion, mysticism, speechcraft

Speechcraft sucks ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Race?

Speechcraft is just about the easiest level to raise.

I rather bribe, it takes less time and makes my wallet lighter (I have too much money ๐Ÿ˜‚ )
