Photomanipulator is the technical term.

At least, that's what it's called when you heavily manipulate a photo so that it's completely different from the original. I do this, and sometimes work for up to 10 hours on a single piece.

Cropping something, or putting a filter on it, is simply editing the photo, not manipulating it.

As an aside: The only people who have a problem with the above are people who quite simply lack the talent to achieve said status as an artist.

Blunt and true.

this is art. beautiful figure against a crummy backdrop. theres a meaning to this pic.

Let's assume for a minute that you are right. What is the correct term for someine that uses the Photoshop then?

I think it would be best all round if the non-artists out there just refrained from saying they 'photoshopped' anything. Perhaps, "Look! I've used filters on this picture, a part of the program called Photoshop, but not a part that is considered worthy of the term 'photoshopping'. I'm nothing, really, but the pic looks cool w00t "

All those in favour say, "Ay'm a Photoshopper!"

Never, ever post a picture like that again, Deano.

Like I just proved, there are two applications of the word "Gay".

What one is more relevant and correct in terms of homosexual discussion? The modern day version, of course.

What term is more relevant? The "original" term of photoshopped or the one that is currently in use by digital artists everywhere? The one Lana and I are adhering to?

Points for guessing the latter.

Actually, love, I did.... 😉

Yes...but that doesn't mean the other can't be used does it? ..or is there some law that forbids it?

Obviously she is making no claims to be a digital artist, so how exactly would she know how the term is used by digital artists?

You and Lana were victimising someone because they aren't as well versed in a specialised field that you both have a knowledge of...

I like this logic. Let's see how it would look to extend it into other mediums.

Guy 1 - "Hey, I'm playing Nintendo, wanna join me?"

Guy 2 - "What, dude, you idiot, you're not playing Nintendo."

Guy 1 - "...What? Of course I am."

Guy 2 - "No, man, you're misusing the term"

Guy 1 - "What are you talking about? I'm playing Gamecube, gamecube is a nintendo system, therefor I'm playing Nintendo"

Guy 2 - "No, you don't understand, you're ignorant. Other people who are better at playing Nintendo games then you are use that term, you aren't as good as them, you don't play as much and don't put out the same effort as them. You haven't earned the right to use the word "Nintendo" to describe what you're doing."

Guy 1 - "What the ****? That sound stupid, I'm playing a Nintendo game on a Nintendo system, I'm using a Nintendo product....how am I not playing Nintendo?"

Guy 2 - "You just aren't, because other lazy people who can't come up with a gobally accurate word that doesn't emphasize a particular product adopted it to describe what they do, you are doing something different from that, you aren't playing with the same skill or effort, and they're right for obvious reasons that will go unexplained."

Guy 1 - "Uh...okay, so what should I call what I'm doing?"

Guy 2 - "You're playing a 'polygonal visual stimulator based on systematic wiring and computer chips in a casual manner', call it that, it's more accurate, and you won't look as stupid."

Guy 1 - "But....It's a nintendo system man...this is all really stupid"

Guy 2 - "No, you're just ignorant, you don't understand the proper termonology like I do."

Guy 1 - "Fine, you know what though, this sounds all really elitest and stupid, but whatever. So anyways....do you want to join me in playing this Polygonal visual stimulator......... based on..... systematic wiring and computer chips...in a casual manner? Did I say that right?"

Guy 2 - "yeah, but the people on the internet have now just decided that instead of using the term "Computer chip" you should use "console chip" because it's a console you're playing, not a computer, and the people who play computer games don't like that word being used in connotation with console gaming. And the people on the internet are the ones that know this stuff, so we should listen to them, they're always right."

Guy 1 - "Man, screw this. I'm going to go play basketball."

Guy 2 - "You idiot! You can't use the term "basketball" because other people....

Guy 1 - *head explodes*

I love it, I'm going to adopt this reasoning asap.

If you lack the talent to call yourself a photoshopper or lack the talent to create something that is photoshopped, then that's your own problem.

Don't take the shortcut and throw yourself in with people who DO have the talent and then moan when you're called out.

It is derived from the program Photoshop, however its usage has become generic, like 'biro', 'refrigerator', or 'launderette'. All of these were once trademarks, but they now apply generically to all things of the kind.

The old 'self-quote'.

I victimized no one Ash, I pointed what she was doing would not be referred to as Photoshopping. Syren for some reason decided to make a big deal out of it, which I really can't understand why.

I know my stuff here, and someone calling themselves a photoshopper when they spend 5 seconds putting a filter on an image is nearly as demeaning as all the people who say digital art isn't art because the program does the work - in fact, it's because of people who do that that a lot of people think digital art isn't art because the program does everything 😬 which isn't the truth at all.

It's not the relevant definition anymore, though. So she quite clearly didn't mean that did she? She meant photoshopped in the conjunction with the definition Lana uses, that digital artists use, quite clearly.

If someone says "Gay", you don't think they mean "Happy" do you? No, why? Because that isn't relevant or primary today.

Exactly, she wouldn't know, so it's carelessness. She should exercise care then.

I don't put points up my ass, but I'll note that witty remark 😉. Because that's what it was, witty. Ten out of ✅.

I'm sorry if you feel like I victimised you, but you were out of line.

She did not call herself a 'photoshopper', Lana. She said she 'photoshopped' the pic. Which she did 😬

But that is kind of strange anyways. I mean certainly there are more advanced even artistic people that alter Photos in a way many others can only dream aboot. But I don't see the big deal in using the Term to photoshop in connection with teh Program called..Photoshop.

Fair enough...but maybe if you'd taken the time to explain that in a more polite way...it just seems a little harsh to jump down her throat because she mis-used a term that is still in the process of being re-defined by the general population...
