jackie has long been the star of every movie he's been in...

Not Asians. They are produced by Hollywood and white directors. The earlier ones were directed by Asians but certainly not produced.

When he is solo, yes. But when he is the partner, no.

If we are gonna stereotype why not mention Chris Tucker's role in the movie as well???
He of course has to play the comic relief part right????
With the rap music blairing in his car and his homies and cousin being drug dealers and such. And that's just one movie!!!

We're not stereotyping. That's the point. We're showing how stereotyping of Asians reconstructs their societal roles.

I gotta go. I'm going out to lunch. I'll be back.

crouching tiger directed by ang lee... written by two asians and one american... yeah, really western...

hero... directed by Yimou Zhang, written by 3 asians...

jackie chan is always the star... i've been watching him since police story and drunken master, i didnt pay money to see it for owen wilson looking good did i?

and it has nothing to do with him being asian... its to do with how damn cool he is...

Draco the girl was Jackie's sister for God sake's. WHat would you have preferred???
I am sure that in the international market you will find plenty of such movies. There isn't a market for that in this country. To ask that question
you must first consider the market and location where you are.
This is Hollywood you are talking about. We all know of Hollywood's as being notorious for not being politically correct and ethnically sensitive
Furthermore if the market or American audience doesn't show much interest in it, then why would the movie industry push for it?
Abroad I am sure that I would find hundreds of movies depicting Asians as well respected actors capable of displaying multiple roles on the big screen

All the movies mentioned were Chinese movies. There were foreign films. Produced in China. They're not American films.

Jackie Chan is VERY cool. I like him better than Jet Li. Really cool looking, and a great fighter. But for god's sake, his acting skills are absymal.

sorry... i don't get you...

True. But Jackie wasn't in the spotlight. He was a sidekick and secondary plot element that spiced things up a bit.

Abroad? Sure. In America, Latin America, and most of Europe. Absolutely not.

10 movies that includes Asian-Americans in leading roles without martial arts, giant robots or giant dinosaurs.. Name them. They have to be relatively well-known. No indie flicks. They always break the norm.

Great fighter? The man's fights are more choreographed than a scene in Fame.

Put him against Bruce Lee and watch him get his head weaved into the floor.

I don't see how a movie showing an asian guy kicking the shit out of many men of varying skin tone is being detrimental to the race, to be honest.

Red Dragon was good. I liked the movie where Jet Li kicked a poolball into someone's head. That was cool.

All I'm saying is that the stereotyping Asians proliferates their own behavior and limits what they can do in life.

Asian actors and actresses for example are extremely hard pressed to find good roles that don't involve being a stunt dummy, a martial artist, a gang member or a prostitute. Lucy Liu, one the most if not the most successful Asian-American actresses as also failed to deviate from this realm.

That's the problem with oppressors and stereotypers in todays society...

They never learned to hate everyone equally...

No. They can be male or female. Well-known, however. Not B grade movie no one has ever heard of.

i don't agree... i don't believe asians (or anyone for that matter) use movies and media portrayal as a guide to their lives...

if anything about asian cultures, they are more resistant to westernisation than most cultures...

you realise that only limits me to hollywood blockbusters?

I'm not saying that they use it as a "guide" but it has a VERY powerful impact on their well-being. And I'm strictly referring to "media items", I'm referring to the American culturalization as a whole.

By B-Grade I mean a movie that was only in the theaters for two weeks, made a couple of mil and went straight to video. Blockbusters are a plus because a lot of people have seen them. Kill Bill, CTHD, Hero, etc. It all just substantiates the Asian stereotype.

i disagree... while the younger asian community seek to interact with other cultures, i dont see it as americanisation as a whole, in ireland there is a huge asian community which manages to interact with irish culture yet sustain their own values.

you want actors or movies?

and white males get as much flak as anyone... always uptight, emotionally stunted, generally uncool arseholes...

In Ireland, maybe. But certainly not in America. Asian American youth are becoming more and more out of touch with their culture.

Both would be nice.

White males have nearly EVERY personality in a movies. Asian-Americans are limited to just a few.

well then move to ireland 😛

but seriously, within asia too the cultures (even the bad parts) are still going strong...

recently i've seen white guys get horrible flak

but it does depend on the actors themselves...

there are more white actors than asian actors, therefore more white actors will appear in movies than asian actors...

if an asian actor proved to be a good enough actor then they would get the part they want...

bai ling is one of my favourite actresses, while not being the most amazingly talented i've always found her watchable, she's done drama and done it well imo...

At this time I can only think of at least a dozen Asian-American actors. I kinda like Ba Ling. Lucy Liu is better in my opinion.

When it comes to the acting world, Asians are f**ed from the start. Get ready to play the prostitute for the umpteenth time..

This thread sure got messy quick.

lucy liu i always liked...

no they're not, if they're good enough they'll get the roles they want... and as for cthd, its more a love story than an action movie, same with hero...
