RTD

aka kinda ghey.

Ah. Disagree then. Didn't like the Rainbow Daleks, but RTD's stuff was amazing. Season 4 and The End of Time were the most awesome DW episodes I've ever seen.

I highly disagree. He showed a strong level of pain and anger that was very convincing to me.

Really enjoying the first 4-5 episodes with Smith. I thought Tennant was a nigh-impossible act to follow without some disappointment, but he's handling the job admirably. Tennant may always be my favorite, and I realize he was too flippant and off-the-wall for some, but the whole thing has been up to standard imo. The reasoning for getting the fiance into the mix was believable as well, which I liked.

I liked for the most part RTD's Eccelston seires.

But once Tennent came on board.
Things got way to (*&^%%^#@#) for me.
Rose became to much of a whiney self centered snot with delusions of Granduer.
Tennent was to over the top,and obnoxious for me to every truly like.
(yes there have been "annoying" Doctors before, but Tennent just tried to to hard to be annoying for my taste.
And I hated the "humaning" of the Daleks in all most all of their apperances.
WAY WAY WAAAAAYY to much overuse of the Sonic.
Tennent acted like he couldn't tie his shoes with out the damn thing sometimes.
Way to much overemotionalization going on.
Ohh Boo Hoo. The Doctor is the last time lord. ....cause he killed em all.
Well no. not really.
Sheesh. Seemed like he was bitching about that almost every 5 minutes.
Too many stupid alien names for races, and planets.
It wasn't cute to begin with and got overused real quick.
And I know sci fi is expensive, but damn it. There is a whole universe of Doctor WHo out there, and the damn show can not get away from HUMANS for just one story?
Even in the very RARE instances where they got to an actual alien planet.
What do we find?
HUMANS!
Humans are the damn cockroaches of the universe.
WAY to many alien invasions of earth.
And the new Sontarans?
WTF!?
I didn't mind them being short.
But the tight little body suits?
Really?
And Donna was the WORST COMPANION EVER!
Worse then even Adric,and Mel.
I could go on and on,but my fingers are getting tired of typing.
Smith's series has been much better in my opinion, but still a few things that could be improved upon.

Are you ****ing kidding me? I was watching the third season of Dr.Who, however, it turns out they put season 4 into the season 3 box. They kepted mentioning Martha and I was all confused on who that is so I went online and figured out they made a mistake. Awful.

HAHAHAHAHA!!

Hmm! Season split for next year.

That's...weird...

And of course it's to **** with people with a huge cliffhanger, AWESOME.

I hate cliffhangers...

Mid-season cliffhangers are rarely a good idea. If they keep pressing for more big events, it has the potential to ruin the excitement some. Still, it may just be a marketing decision, with Moffat putting a respected voice behind the choice...because the loooong wait between some seasons creates even more agitation with the fans.

I've heard the argument that Smith is even more over the top than Tennant. Certainly they're the top 2 eccentric Doctors ever. But I feel like "what's the point?" if the Doctor is terribly serious. The flighty quirks and reckless abandon are what separate him from so many other characters.

To Fly, though, the fact that it's almost entirely on Earth is a marketing decision. The writers' hands are tied on that one. A while back I read some of the data they based their decision on, and it basically points to the idea that you alienate (pun intended) chunks of the audience (even a sci-fi audience) if it's away from Earth for too long. They decided to keep the show grounded in the relationships with the Doctor, his companions, and the companions' families. But it sounds like you hated, well, a lot of things. I'm surprised you've continued with it. My advice would be to try to accept whatever comes along, just like we must with all kinds of popular fiction. Not blindly and uncritically, but not letting the bad sour the good.

Side note, Smith's theme music is awesome.

Murray Gold had already hit some home runs during Tennant's run, but he really outdid himself here imo.

I too rather like both Tennant and, from the few episodes I've seen, Smith as well. I think I like to watch eccentric characters.

You know what part I adore in that music link, and the music I'm most looking forwards to owning when the CD is released, the part that plays from 2.28. I remember that first playing at the end of the very first episode where it pans across Amy's dressing table and up to the wedding dress. Fab scene.

Tennant was definitely more over the top in the comedic scenes, on the verge of cringeworthy actually, unlike with Smith. Over the top, but good over the top in scenes.

The split season could well also be influenced by heavy demand on Moffat to write another series of Sherlock, which went down very well on the BBC lately.

Production teams move off-Earth as they get more confident and in their stride. The relaunched series 1 was 100% on Earth, but it was about 1/3rd off-Earth by series 4.

RTD said something to the effect of he'd have done more off-Earth stuff if he was happy that it could be done right.

Bah, everyone loves that ducky little woodwind solo, but the best part immediately precedes it...from about 1:49 to 2:28. I <3 Epic stuff, so it's really up my alley.

Disagreed, I think it's the other way around, personally.

Everyone loves it because it's good. 😛 I prefer it to the 'epic' stuff.

Music really hasn't changed a whole lot since the rebirth.

Same composer, so kinda. But LOTS of new themes and moods. Gold is really, really excellent at creating scores. I was sad to see some of the old themes go that just signaled "bad guys" and such. But they really did try to refresh everything with the Tennant-to-Smith switch.

The music is quite good, but I find myself being over the whole, Random choir trend that tends to happen in most of the "epic" music of late.
There are plenty of ways to achieve that feeling without resorting to the cop-out of a choir "ooh"-ing.
The little piano part is cool because of its syncopation over the relatively straightforward rest of the piece. Not to say that I didn't enjoy it.
Just my thoughts

For me the Dalek episode was the only real dissapointment of matt's first season.

Way to RTD for my taste.

I see what you mean (aka the sort of 'toy commercial/fanboy' feel), but I thought it was in general a really good episode. It really played on the Doctor's rivalry with his arch enemies, and the fact that they will always be at war. It felt almost like Spider-Man and the Green Goblin where no matter what form or memory they take, the Doctor will always hate them and never stop doing so. The Master ("me gone wrong"😉, Davros (a brilliant mind that could've helped so many, but instead brings death and destruction), and the Cybermen (one incredible individual against an army of faceless and unimaginative army), are all enemies that play on something personal for the Doctor, but the Daleks play on nothing but his anger. I believe that Moffat did a fantastic job of displaying that.
However, I found the "new and improved" thing useless, especially since I see no efficiency difference.

Oooo just pre ordered the soundtrack for Series 5, it's out on the 8th of November. Finally.

Interesting though slightly late news (it came through at the start of the month)

Moffat has announced he will be keeping the classic Dalek designs, with the news ones being used just as the leaders.

A clear re-think there. In any case, though, it seems likely there will be no Dalek story next year. Yay!

For those who don't know and in Britain, Matt Smith's Doctor will be appearing in the two parter Sarah Jane Adventures next week on Monday and Tuesday. 🙂

Considering that was the most ridiculous continuity/fangasm fest, that was surprisingly good!

I don't think I've ever seen so many continuity references. Odd how quickly the Tenth Doctor becomes part of the history rather than the present!
