"Not wanting to sound disparaging," says Halatir, "but Vardalain was not necessarily known as the most gracious of beings. He offended many."

"Yes, I had heard that some of my friends, well, trod on a few feet, so to speak, the last time they were here. But nevertheless, the sudden dissapearance of one of my bretherin is disturbing, especially since he was in such great trust with the King."

"Gentlemen? Excuse me. I cannot help but overhear your rather... controversial group. My name is Tenharian." I nod.

Think you're with us anyway, but still. Who are you talking to? Seinost and Menelacar?

"Well, that hasn't served Arthedain so well in the past. Perhaps stout-heartedness is not quite enough in these uneasy times."

"Strange thing to say. It is such leadership that has kept Arthedain intact where the rest of Arnor fell."

---

"Like I say," says Halatir, "mine is not to work out the reasoning of the brood of Elrond."

Weeeell...
This isn't really going anywhere...

maybe you stop beating around the bush.

None of the Lords are going to believe that Vardalain has been nobbled as part of a treacherous conspiracy; that's a fairly outrageous suggestion.

Tenharien looked at Darvan and shook his head as he turned from his slow pace and stood alone for but a second. "Darvan is it, you seem rather calm in these troubled hours."

"Of course, you misunderstand my meaning. I merely comment on the unfortunate defeats of late. Have you much experience in battle?"

"One surprise attack does not cast aspersion on the destiny of Man. In the most recent pitched battle, at Baranar, we came away victorious! As for me... no, I have never served in the field."

"Neither have I: hopefully one day I will feel my blade slice through Orc."

He smiles.

"I shall be surprised if a southern realm ever has to worry about Orcs again. It seems that Easterlings and Southrons will forever be your burden."

"Calm?" Darvan looks at him, "What have I to be worried about? The only thing that occupies my mind now is the tourney, and to that end I wait for it to begin."

"Easterlings, Southrons, Wainriders, it makes no difference to me. Have you never been tempted to test your mettle against your country's foes?"

"No," says Seinost. "Don't get me wrong, I would defend this realm to the death, but I do not go seeking war where it is not necessary."

"So who would you put your faith in to defend Arthedain? With new armies being formed, someone stout-hearted and tactically adept must surely be the choice."

"I am happy to take the King's counsel on that matter. My opinion is, anyone seeking to lead the armies should not be allowed to do so. They would seek active war, to send our troops out on conquest, and that would not end well."

"I do not understand im afraid. Is it glory you seek in this tournament? Relief maybe... to relieve yourself from the truth that you cannot escape? We are here yes, and the games are just before us, but they are just games, and while there is wrok to be done, we will be all of us intrigued and our minds plauged with selfish prizes." Tenharien looked at the other, confused for second, still not sure why they were taking this small break. Even though the Tournament was very important to access information, still he thought there must be another way to do so.

"Glory?" Darvan shakes his head slowly. "No, it is not. Nor is it relief - for what have I to escape from? I am here willingly, and my days are mine alone to spend. If I can help the people of this land, I will, but I can give aid and compete in the tournament. That is not selfish. Why are you here?"

"Very wise, my lord. Does anyone of such ambitions avail themselves of the council?"
