Not trying to turn this thread into an abortion debate.
Capital punishment is nothing but a short term solution. We need to remove the elements of civilisation that drive people to such acts as murder, not simply remove people from civilation. Murderers are the symptoms of an unhealthy culture. The death penalty therefore treats the symptom, not the illness. The collective conciousness of society must be raised so that no one will choose to or be allowed to become sick enough to resort to murder. Those who see society as incapable of this at some point in the future simply have no imagination.
