Hardcore Sony/PS fans will be willing to pay the money, yes. But the hardcore fans make up a VERY small part of the population and are not enough to make or break a system - it's the casual gamers who do that.New and untested tech is a good reason why so many people are wary on the PS3, actually. I work in a game store. Already I've been asked more times than I can count what blu-ray is and why PS3 is so damn expensive.
And preorders sold out because there were very limited numbers available. I think here in the US, each EB Games and Gamestop had 16 per store. And having a preorder doesn't even guarantee getting a system, and the next shipment likely won't be until Christmas. I've pointed this out before - Sony's creating a false sense of demand with a very low supply.
I totally agree with you about the casual gamer, which was the reason the Playstation fanbase is soo big. It's the casual gamer machine, but with the PS3, they're taking what they have been doing, and competly going an different way. Now, Sony is catering to the hardcore gamer crown and relying on their fanbase to buy the expansive system. The question is, will the casual gamer take thier alligience elsewhere?
Dirk, you cant really use Sony's history of console realeases as evidence of them doing the correct thing now. Your clearly forgetting that PS1 and PS2 were the first next generation consoles to be released. Now, its competly different.
Heck, if you look back into last generations history you would see that the PS3 is pretty much the original XBOX. The orginal XBOX was the biggest and most expansive tech when it first came out a year after the PS2. Whatelse didnt help was that an killer app was just released for the PS2 which pretty much stunted the XBOX's growth. That game was GTA3.
Now in present time, the PS3 is coming out an year later than the XBOX 360, with being more expansive and more powerful than the 360. Lucky for the 360, GTA is not exclusive to the PS3, and that an huge killer app is being released in a couple of days for the 360 called Gears Of War. You never know, history could repeat itself.

As for the Console Lifecycle I showed above that came right out of my head, it’s not exact but that is about how all systems work. I know this because I have seen it with my own eyes having lived through the Atari vs Coleco - NES vs SMS - SNES vs GEN -PS1 vs Saturn VS N64 -PS2 vs Dreamcast vs Game cube vs Xbox eras

Well I'm a hard core gamer and I can afford a PS3 but I'm not going to pay 600 bucks for it, just like I'm not going to pay 500 for the Xbox360. 300 is the absolute most I will pay for a new system now. But I never buy a new system when it first comes out I always wait for the first price drop because good games aren't out until then anyways. But I'm only 22 and am just out of college so I don't have much money yet. But when I'm 30 I will have a lot more money so I might pay 500, 600 bucks for a system, and the average video gamer is 30 and that is what they are targeting. So just be you and I and most everyone on the forum isn’t going to buy the systems doesn’t mean as much as it seems because most of us on the form are under 30……..I think I have only been posting here for about 4 days so I don’t know the average age but it seems pretty young.
For a guy whos 22 and who has lived thru the Atari vs Coleco wars, he sure knows a lot about gaming even tho he only goes by how the graphics look like.

I think he moved and since the umbilical is attached it senses his movements like the Wiimote... wow so I guess he was the first one to use motion sensing for games too.
Hell I make pretty decent money, and I don't plan on buying a PS3... of course I'm not hardcore gamer. I'd like to be, but I don't spend enough time at home and I'd rather focus my finances. However when I do get home I'll get a Wii, 4 controllers, a couple of games and have a party for less than one $600 PS3!! How crazy is that??
It's gonna be so #%$^ing funny if HD-DVD gets dumped as an obsolete format in 2 years and Blu ray takes off as the predominate media format, then all of the Xbox fans will have to buy a Blu ray player or PS3 to watch all the new hi def movies.
I don't know why you hate the PS3 so much(probably something to do with the mindless masses) but why don't you download the stats and then see if you would be able to build a computer as powerful for the same price, I doubt you can seen as a processor as powerful as the Cell costs a smidgen under a grand.
I've seen displays for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs right next to each other. Both get half a full wall shelf from floor to top of display, and they're both always full of the discs, almost like... nobody's touched them. 😮
I predict both phail and the DVD remains standard, or no one cares at all and the two newers sell mediocrely while standard DVDs remain favored.

Spoken like a true Sony fanboy. And I HATE fanboys. The Wii will destroy Sony at launch. Did you even SEE the line at E3 to play the Wii compared to PS3s line?
Oh, and Avenger..buddy? They'll both fail. Why? Hi Definition is in its infant stages right now. Not everyone can afford a two grand television simply because of better picture. And Blu-ray? Don't get me started. The cost of producing a game or movie on a BR disc will cost MUCH, MUCH more than a standard DVD9.
Remember Mini-Disc? It failed.
Remember UMD? That failed.
Nevermind the fact that they STILL can't keep the damned thing [ PS3 ] from overheating just BECAUSE of the Blu-Ray Drive. And why do people hate the PS3 so much? Because it costs too fkn much. Kitarugi-san is INSANE to think that casual gamers will shell out 600 dollars just for a videogame system. Sure, the rich folks can afford it, but where's the casual stand? Broke.
In my opinion, go for the Wii. Nintendo cares about what no one else cares about apparently. What's that you ask? Gameplay.
