Last-Gen Console Discussions (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii)

Sony does seem to be achieving some sort of company suicide. I still don't see anything wrong in PS3 itself (Besides the high price, of course...but I got the money), and it has the best games lineup for me...so I am getting it.

because i played zelda at my friends house and i could see shaking the controller around 100 times every time you play thing could get a little old.

No older than pushing a button.

Incidentally, I understand this might mean ALL PS3s produced in future may not have the Emotion chip.

Now, what is all this about Sony removing the emotion chip from the Eurpoean PS3, basically knackering the PS2 backward compatibility?

I guess they thought it would be a good idea to alienate an entire region of customers because "People don't care about backwards compatability".

But, I think it has something to do with the many problems they've been having with backwards compatability over here.

A little bit, it does get annoying. But the bad thing is that once you beat a game, you don't feel like rebeating it for some reason on the Wii :/

The Assassin Creed forum said that it will be out about 2/4 or 3/4 of 2007. Stores are already selling it for preorder and they are saying it will be out for August.

Hmm, I didn't hear anything about that, what site, Ush?

EDIT: Found it Ush. Well, it will cut prices, but I don't think many customers will be happy. There are some very good and original games on the PS2 the public will want to play. A good plan for this thought, is to recreate these games to run on a PS3 chip.

Well, i'm glad I bought mines already with backward compability.

Well, from what can be told, they are NOT cutting prices yet.

Certainly not in Europe, where people will actually pay more than the US price... for a machine with less in it.

Actually they're getting more (although it depends on what your perspective is) They are being preloaded with future items not yet on Japanese and North American PS3s:

uropean PS3's will be preloaded with this latest update.

Features of this latest firmware include:

More refined PS Store frontend
Playstation Network integrity enhanced
Wallpapers from pictures
Ability to change background colours
Sony Connect Store for music and movies added to the PS Store. Hundreds of trailers/full films/song videos and mps3's available for download.
Playstation Card option in PS Store enabled.
Playstation Lifestyle- Similar to my space/youtube. User generated content and experiences are the key.
+ more.

Removal of Emotion Engine chips in PS3's in NA and Japan to follow in April. Reason for this is to reduce costs and focus on enhanced opportunities via software. Benefits include the ability to upscale selected PSone/PS2 games to 1080i/720p.

So they got rid of the Emotion engine for stuff for DVD/PS2 upscaling and other features. Time will tell how good this stuff is but I'm excited about it.

Also the PS2/PS1 backward compatability is exaggerated. It will thousands of games but not all of them. The software will be updated through Firmwire.

It's pretty similar to the Xbox 360 situation when it first came out. It had an absymal backward compatiblity list but it increased over time with Live updates. PS3 will likely be the same. (And yes, Sony copied something else. LOL.)

More PS3 Updates (nobody's posting the positive stuff so whatever...):

"FIRMWARE v2 - Downloaded PS1 games will play on the PS3

The next major update to the Playstation 3 firmware will not be v1.55. The changes to the Playstation firmware are deemed to be so significant that it will in fact be v2.0, and will bring 'big changes.' It will be available to the European market at the time of the PS3 launch (23rd March). It may be available to the Japanese and North American PS3 owners a week or two earlier. Apparantly Sony regard the PS3 launch to date as being a 'soft' launch- ie, creaating brand awareness, and fixing manufacturing and distribution issues. The launch of firmware 2.0 and assoicated updates of services is being described by Sony as 'mindblowing' and is the start of the 'real launch' - and a massive push by Sony.

Confirmed: Playstation 1 games downloaded over the Playstation Network will now play directly on the PS3, as well as on the PSP console."

Lots of development talk.
Release dates for key games. Warhawk in June/July 2007. Heavenly Sword delayed. Killzone and MGS4 in late 2007.

New content on PS Store available on the 8th:

Tekken 6 trailer
Lair demo & trailer
Rainbow Six Vegas demo
EA: Skate trailer
Battlefield Bad Company trailer
Warhawk demo
Virtua Fighter 5 demo
Virtua Tennis 3 demo & trailer
GRAW 2: trailer
Mortal Kombat 2 game
Killzone trailer

Killzone demo for May.

Really Good News: RUMBLE IS COMING BACK. A Firmware update will allow the rumble on the PS3 controller.

"This Is Living TV" will be coming to PS3. It's basically like Apple Itunes that allows streaming/download of movies, music, TV shows, etc. Sony will apparently work in colloboration with Apple for this.

All pics are in realtime not CG. This game runs natively at 1080p and supposedly either rivals or surpsasses Gears of War. Some say it will become the new standard in graphics Though I can't really tell. So you do it for yourselves:

Here are some more LAIR pics in high-definition (I don't know what scale) Once again these ARE NOT CG scenes. These are realtime:

Yeah in April or May. The Europeans are really the lucky ones. Sure they don't have a chip that allows backward compatibility with ALL PS1/PS2 games but they do have all these updates (like upscaling something that we don't have at all) and access to features we don't even have yet. So they're more or less getting a better or even deal then us.

And eventually ALL NA and Japanese systems will be chip-less.

Err, lucky in that they pay the same money for a system with less hardware, for a nsystem update that everyone else will have in two months anyway?

Only a moron can seriously think that 'lucky'. Don't take the piss; Europe is losing out by never getting the opportunity for the superior version.

That the chip is being removed to lower production costs is an admission that they have cocked up said costs.

Way to stretch the page.

Wait, I don't remember Gears being that blurry or that low res or is that 'cause of IGN's typical low qual JPEGs?

And the European PS3 will still play thousand of PS1/PS2 games (particularly the good ones like FFX) regardlessly. Sure it may not be able to play all of them initially but over time with Fireware updates the list of BC will increase exponentially. Over a time period of say two months.

They still getting the latest software and updates we probably won't see for months.

But yes, it's obviously to decrease their production costs to focus on other avenues and soften the blow of their losses.

I personally don't see much of the problem with BC. I agree that Europeans got screwed over with less hardware but if I had a PS3 I wouldn't want to initially play Dino Crisis 2 from PS1 when I buy it. I would rather use the new stuff.

Sorry for the stretchness...

😮

I found a better pic, I think:

Hey, you know what I don't appreciate?

When people post large images that cause the page to scroll horizontally.

Or when they post 5 posts in a row of nothing but images.

Simply post the links to the images.

Yup.

'Other' PS3s will cease to exist soon worldwide anyway. Europe is just getting the cut down version first. Woo.
