Which is precisely why you never, ever get a video game system (or any electronic, really) this early in the life cycle.

Especially nowadays with technology updating itself and having new versions and vistas and betas and alphas in the space of week.

I mean, really! Like the Ipod. A new Ipod comes out every damn month.

Yeah... In that case early buyers get the PS2 and PS3 chip, including all those crazy updates that PS3 tried to make up for. Sounds preety sweet, the only thing I am afraid off is that it produce all it's updateto be chip compatible too, or PS3's with chips may start malfunctioning at certain updates that are made for the non-chip PS3's.

This is unquestionably a foul-up, of course. You do not make a significant (not essential, buit significant) hardware change to a games console within a few months of release unless something has ballsed up.

That said, better they act early than ignore the problem. So, from Sony's point of view- why the change? it;s to reduce costing, but does that mean:

a. It has ended up being harder to produce than they thought

or

b. Poorer than expected PS3 sales have led to a change in profit forecast and they are trying to find any way they can to reduce costs?

or

c. Part of a general cost reduction programme from Sony as a result of various marketting issues

All articles I read on the story about Sony taking out the PS2 chips say that they do it to cut costs, and it would be produced faster.

I don't think the PS2 chip is THAT hard to make. Maybe it did make the production of the PS3 a bit longer, but not anything they would change their way of making it because of it.

I think their doing it to reduce costs, since most people right now can't afford the PS3, and because of that Producers are worried to make the games for it, and when other people who can afford the PS3 see that Producers are afraid, they get afraid as well and don't buy it.

The slight problem with that argument is that the cost reduction isn't being passed on to customers, so people still can't afford it.

Well, the European version is no cheaper for it.

There may be future price cuts on the PS3, but not related to this issue. This is a matter of trying to keep costs down, not prices.

All next gen console makers need to stop makeing systems for other things besides gameing. I dont want to watch dvd's on my ps2 and i dont want to go on the internet with my wii. Playing online is one thing but becasue of all of the non gameing add on's is in my opion why the console prices are so high.

To be fair, the Wii's internet options allow the Virtual Console and so on and are very cheap.

Dang, the Europeans are really screwed this time.

They get Firmwire that is MUCH more unreliable then the chip.
Same cost with an unreliable software.
Late launch for the PS3 than other countries.

The only thing I see they have an advantage at is that they don't have to spend 20 minutes doing a system update like the American PS3 users have to 😂

Even though the PS3 made a production cost cut they are still looseing money off every system they sell so they aren't going to drop the price for a while, and if your like me and want the ps3 for both the games and the blu-ray then 600 bucks is a steal.
