Don't know anyone who have had the Red Ring of Death.
10% is just nonsense.
then in that case you'd be kidding yourself.
the ring of death it's really that bad. I remember, before ever knowing about the problem, that my friend's 360 once had a red light in the power ring and I ask him what it was and he didn't know, then we knew that it was an internal problem with the console... (not to mention that his disk were so damn scratched for no apparent reason... 😆 )
he did the smart thing and got rid of the unit (he sent it back to his brother in the US) and got himself a new one, avoid any kind of modding, and has a brand new unit (about 6 moths ago), and hasn't had any problems since.
the problem exists, and there's a high probability of getting it (anything higher than 5% it's a high number considering how many units that actually means). it it wasn't so much of problem, then Microsoft wouldn't be wasting the kind of many they are to extend the warranty to full 3 years
Like Lana said, what they should be doing it's fixing the problem internally, going back to design and seeing what when wrong and actually fixing it, not just realising a "patch" like they're so accustomed to doing (It is Microsoft after all)
extending the warranty isn't a way to fix the problem, it means "we know with messed up but we rather lie back and give you a 3 years console, rather than a full generation life span (5 years) console"
funny thing it's the 360 it's almost 2 years old, so that means there's 1 year left for it to live (.. for those who purchased the console in it's launch year).... quite pathetic if you ask me.

there are some articles saying that 1 out of 5 would bog down due to the red ring of death. i think industry standard is around 2-3% and there are reports that defective xbox 360s are around 5-10%. this may not be a large figure when looking at the total number of 360s out there. but here where i live, there are about 5 merchants selling the 360 each with about 3 units in stock. that makes a total of 15 units and 3 of this may potentaily be defective. the 360s and the ps3s price here is inflated beyond reason which is why i have to do some really indept research before i go out and buy a console.the worst part is, most of the on hand stocks here are old units manufactured las 2006. which is more reason to be extra vigilant.
i feel microsoft has to really address this issue before the holidays as this could deture possible customers from buying the unit this season.
I don't know if you already made up your mind or not, but I think you'd be better doing what I did... getting a Wii first ✅
if you care so much about the "ring of death" problem, and the warranty won't apply to you (as I know there are places in which the warranty doesn't apply, like in my case...) then you are better off with a Wii
haven't heard of any problems with it ( besides Wii-ing with your TV, I mean breaking your TV with the wiimote), and Nintendo does make quality products so they don't need more than 90 days warranty (by quality I mean that I wont break... I still hate N64)
besides it'll cost you much cheaper than PS3 or a 360
I think you have about the same problem as I do: down here the 360 cost about 500$ (that's the core version) and the Wii costs 580$ (insane isnt it?), the PS3 it's about a whooping 850$. (+ or -50, depending on the store)
I outsmarted resellers, and got my Wii in the US (Toys"R"Us) and only paid 250 for it (plus 23$ taxes)
now if you take into consideration how much it'll cost you to upgrade your 360 to match the quality of the PS3 (not talking about games here) it'll cost you a lot more than the PS3.
the only modding that I would recommend doing to the 360 (though it's not modding per se) its getting a really good cooling system for it. that'll help you avoid the 3 red lights as much as possible. If you installed a mod chip (to play back ups) then you wouldnt be able to use XBOXlive, since your 360 would be banned for life.... but if you don't care so much about online (like I do) then a modchip wouldnt be a problem...(you'll only need the Core version and you'd be good to go.. if your lucky enough to never had the ring of death problem)
but you don't have to worry about any of those problems with a PS3... you get most of what you need just by buying the console (it wont break). The only problem you'll have (and that's the one that hurts the most) it's the lack of games 🙁
In my case MGS4, Ratchet & Clank and FFXIII are reason enough for getting a PS3 ✅... and there's also God of War, Tekken, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Resistance..... and 😕 Lair 😆 (it's good once you get used to the Sixaxis)
... not to mention the Blueray player that comes with it
..but if you got money to spare, get all three of them!.
if you don't like your PS3 you can always sell it or trade it for a new 360 to replace your other dead 360 😆... the Wii could just sit pretty next to the TV
I already have my Wii and I’m quite happy with it (though I’ve only got 3 games for it), now all I need its a PS3, which I'd be getting by the end of next year (2008) or early 09. (regardless of it being the loser of this gen war)
the only way I'll ever get a 360 it's:
- if I get one for free 😄
- if Microsoft warranty it's fully cover down here
- if Microsoft assures me ( or everybody) that the console has been redesigned and wont break... unless I break it by smashing it to pieces
I dont lose sleep over its games cuz I could/can get most (if not all) of its games for my PC
