Last-Gen Console Discussions (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii)

This "Natal technology" seems to incorporate motion detection similar to the Wii.
Maybe this is Microsoft's strategy to attract more casual gamers.

It's completely different than the Wii.

Natal uses a special 3D camera that detects motion in a 3D space. It basically detects any body movement so you dont need a controller.

There's only been one game released during this console generation that could have benefited from the extra space available with a blu-ray, and that wasn't even a PS3 game.

Which game do you have in mind?

There are rumors that a new XBOX will be released sometime in 2010.

If it's true, I hope they get the hardware right this time.
Cause I'm sick and tired of replacing RRoDs.

wasn't the Jasper mobo supposed to fixed the RRoD... or is that one having troubles as well

As was mentioned earlier, the new Xbox model is about incorporating the Natal technology.

last time I check, it's not "incorporating" as in a new console. It is actually more like being Bundled with the console. Maybe it'll be a revised version, but is esentially the same... only with the camera in the box

... and that note, I heard M$ is dropping the Pro-version and sticking only with Elite and Arcade...

Funny how most made fun of Sony for aiming at a 10 year lifetime cycle... and now M$ is saying the same thing ... haha..

pretty much, though it scans on 3D plane as well...

Yeah, there isn't going to be a new XBOX model.

Probably just as a bundle.

Have the rumours of it being an updated model been squashed then?

I heard a week or two ago that it was just a false rumor and it'll likely be nothing but a bundle.

Yeah, one MS exec said that they're will be a new 360 redesign with Natal.

Then another exec a couple of days later basically said what the hell he was talking about there isnt one.

I tried to find the article but I couldn't but I'm pretty sure thats the case.

Yea, just look at games like Crysis, Killzone 2, Far Cry 2. All of them are soulless turds once you get over the pretty graphics. That's like after 10 minutes.

Killzone 2's multiplayer is actually very nice. It is the one thing that kept me from shooting my brains off when my 360s decided to dance the ROD ballad.

Have you tried the multiplayer? Its actually well thought out, intense and varied. I really like how the objectives change mid-game...gives it a more "real war" feeling. Not to mention the badges and how you can combine them is fun.

I don't know about anyone, but I loved Crysis and its exp pack/sequel.

Great games and a ton of fun.

Indeed, Crysis is excellent. As is Warhead.

I liked it because it's not the same as most shooters.

It's modern and the suit is a pretty good gimmick which makes it look like a regular modern shooter but it does not rely on scripted events. There is some but not alot.

I just like the idea of looking at a map, seeing where you need to go and figuring out how to get there. It's a different feeling than CoD4 where you get dropped down from a scripted event and it's shooting gallery.

I've played it twice so far and I've done most areas completely different.

Actually, I liked Crysis better than Warhead.

There both equally as good.

What is the general consensus on Microsoft extending the lifespan of the 360, btw? Because I feel they missed a trick there to demolish Sony and their pompous ten year plan.

The worst thing is, if Microsoft are not going to push on with a new console, I don't think anyone will. With Nintendo, people are buying too much easily produced crap for them to be motivated to do a new console (heck, they already abandoned work on a successor to the DS line for more or less that reason) and Sony are out for the count due to the high costs of the PS3 meaning that always had to be the plan.

The console market has been kept alive by a regular turnaround of new platforms. Natal doesn't meet that expectation for my tastes, and nor will a High def Wii, assuming Nintnedo even bother to do that.

I don't know, really.

Though I'm not sure about Natal in general. I disagree that moving entirely to motion sensing is necessarily a good idea - if nothing else, the Wii shows that while motion can work very well if properly utilized, when it's not it's simply cumbersome, awkward and imprecise.

I've always estimated that the 360 would have an ~7-8 year lifespan, with a new system coming out when it's about 6 years old. It's now been around for nearly 4 years, so let's see how close that holds...not really sure about it anymore to be honest. I think it might end up being longer, considering the success MS has had.

actually it was the same exec being quoted on both cases. He said he was misinterpreted... or it was a poor choice of words that let to speculations... I'd look for it, but I'm lazy... 😛
In both cases what they said at E3 (every 360 will work with Natal) still stands...

If they keep to their word, the "pompous" plan will work for the both of them.

what's the point of a new console though?
It might be just me, but I have yet to see a single PC game that can't work on PS360. the technology will come, but at this moment is a moot point, especially when they are getting their butts handed to to them by Nintendo and its technologically inferior machine.

the next big thing is either:
- higher resolution (there are TVs capable of higher-res than 1080p), though why bother?, HDTVs are getting much broader adoption rate, though it's not enough... a higher-res LED TV will be initially much more expensive, and you need an 80" TV to appreciate any difference in resolution
- going all motion control, which is currently happening... to our disdain
- stereoscopic 3D, which was shown first by SONY working on current PS3 hardware (not need for new one), and now it'll be widely available with the release of the first 3-D game ("G-force" for X360 an PS3)... or wait for the commercial release of 3D TVs (no glasses) that don't have as much blur on the sides and don't make your eyes cry every ten minutes...

anything other than that will be an upgrade on processing power, to have: all games running on 1080p with less low-res texture and shorter loading times (if ever possible)... that many are unable to appreciate on their SDTVs.
I'm not saying it won't happen... but

The HD-Wii needs to happen, though I doubt it will anytime soon
