he meant that he couldnt put hulk down for the count in a direct confrontation, so he resorted to the bfr which did tactically defeat the hulk and served thor's interests.Hulk flies back to earth afterwards, it was a momentary win for thor. this is fine. if hulk didnt have the hammer to get back he'd be lost in space forever (or until he found some plot device like a starship to hijack)
And I'm not trying to turn this into a forum battle. I was reading the book and said to myself the dialogue exchange was weird.
First he gets up and says the first part, then hulk say his thing, and then Thor makes it sound like Hulk was foolish for believing it.
It was weird. It was like Thor went to implying and saying two exactly different things in one sentence.
As putting eachother down in the fight itself. In that fight Thor took a hit from Hulk with the hammer, and apparently overpowered Hulk's attack. Unless Thor simply beat Hulk to the punch which could also be the case.
Originally posted by NewjakMeh, it's just my opinion. Don't think the brief pauses in their fight resulted in wins for either of them because I still look at it as one big fight.
I'm not arguing about what Hulk did to Thor, but I thought Thor put Hulk down for a bit from that lightning attack to the head.

it goes like this:
"I cant beat you, I never could"
translation: I cant really put you down by hammerstrikes and lightning bolts, you freak. this will drag out and eventually, you win
"...I knew" translation: I actually didn't, but I'm bragging
"did you now?" translation: you moron, just because I cant kill you, doesnt mean I cant still kick your dumb ass to another galaxy where you wont brag so much
notice that hulk can only return to earth because of the hammer so thor still has that edge as BFR would defeat just about any version of the hulk. until he starts creating wormholes by breaking spacetime with gamma powered farts that is, but that shouldnt start happening until next year.

Thor was taking Hulk around and Hulk woke and started to attack Thor. Thor put him back to sleep with one lightning bolt to the back of the head.
Is it truly decisive no, but it showed that Thor can.
As for the dialogue that is one way to look at it.
It still is odd cause Thor seemed smug about the whole thing. It was just off.
It felt more like
"I cant beat you, I never could" translation: You're a hard sonbiotch to put down
"...I knew" translation: I actually didn't, but I'm bragging
"did you now!" with a smile translationS:
I can still kick your dumb ass to another galaxy where you wont brag so much
You're idiot I didn't mean I couldn't beat you but I have other things to do besides trying to see if I can.
I know what I just said but f it I'm Thor and you just messed up.
Like I said it was just weird

yep, weird. i really couldn't have cared less if hulk decisively won the fight--he's the f'n hulk AND he has an asgardian hammer that has repeatedly been said to place the weilders in thor's power class (hell, hulk likely SHOULD have won!)--but the dialogue really didn't work for me. thor's crack about the hulk being a pain in the a$$ didn't work all the well for me either. same with his dialogue in the thor arc with galactus. just doesn't really sound like a traditional thor to me. meh, like i said, i'm of the mind that thor maybe learned something from the fight. we'll see when/if the rematch happens.

I believe Thor was referring to their never-ending rivalry rather than hinting at an actual continuation of that particular fight.
That makes sense.
I have my own personal opinions concerning the fight and the rivalry as a whole - and yeah, I'm a Thor fan, so there's that - but all in all, I enjoyed the fight. Fraction's dialogue is Fraction-y, but I can live with it.
