Stuff like that fails miserably when other games successfully create similar tension with good controls.Anyways I realize I come off as a hater, but to be honest I am long time RE fan and it just annoys me that something that has been around since the very first game and that actually feels dated is still in such a fine, polished game.
Anyways I'm done complaining about them. RE5 will own.
Ditch the hyperbole, there would be tension regardless, it's just a matter of degree. Not allowing you to move and kite enhances it to a degree beyond what it could be if they allowed such. It would be factually impossible for them to get the tension as high as it is now if you were able to just walk away while shooting.
I admit the controls were weird to me, but that's no fault of theirs, it's because I'm so used to action game controls like GOW. This is a survivor horror game and so its controls and what it allows is obviously going to be different and even opposite of what they allow in action games. The point in RE5, just from the demo, is obviously to simply survive encounters, having you stationary just makes surviving all the more difficult.
