The Battle Bar, Our Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy

You should all look into Christopher Priest's entire body of work as well, he's both an incredible writer and an incredible storyteller and he's truly supreme in his ability to insert a science fiction twist into a real world story. Fun Fact: his 1995 novel The Prestige is the only novel to ever win both a major literary award and a major genre award; that's probably one of the finest accolades you could give to a novel.

Can't we just watch the movie?

The film's actually a very loose adaptation of the novel; it takes the setting, characters, and the general plot direction that the book takes, but aside from that it can be considered a thoroughly reimagined version of events; a large part of the book's story is set 100 years later as well which the film doesn't even touch upon.

There are also his other works such as The Separation, The Glamour, The Extremes, The Affirmation, Inverted World, A Dream of Wessex, Fugue for a Darkening Island and The Space Machine, all of which are just as compelling and ingenious.

I'd go with The Wheel of Time over either two if you haven't yet read it; it's a [soon to be] 14 book epic that beats out The Lord of the Rings, The Dark Tower, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Sword of Truth, The Realm of the Elderlings and just about any Fantasy series out there.

It would be better if the female characters weren't all bitches. That, and the ending of TGS was... ugh. Power of Love? Fuck that. Like I understand the underlying Tragic Optimism/Camuseqsue rebellion in the face of the absurd, but it just didn't work for me.

I've read WoT and the first five books were superb.

However, the rest of the series (except for maybe 9) until Sanderson took over slowed down the plot to a snail's pace, and became full of essentially unnecessary filler.

Jordan took Tolkien to the next level and described everything he saw with as much description as possible. That isn't necessarily a great approach. Tolkien and other writers have a lot of description, but they allow room for their readers to imagine as well. And Tolkien's masterpiece was always about the world he had created, and the man breathed life into it to add to its wonder and magical nature. He didn't spend pages on a woman's dress.

I think if Jordan had finished WoT in seven books, the series would have been the best. As it turns out, the way the story (not counting the copious amount of filler) comes to a grinding halt as well as the tedious descriptions and superficial/boring characters (especially some of the women), it doesn't deserve the title of best.

That being said, WoT is entertaining and is something special. Jordan created a tremendously complex and beautiful world full of magic, intrigue, politics, and war, and really started the the gray fantasy genre.

The Sword of Truth

Apparently that series sucks. At least, What I've read in this sporkings tells me it sucks.

I mean seriously, a book where the main characters superpower is that he's always right? WTF?!

The main Big Bad is the ultimate source of evil in the multiverse... like... Shai'tan is the transcendent form of evil.

I hate that site. All that woman does is nitpick line by line. She's full of shit.

To be fair Eragon has a lot of nits to pick. And its not like its a serious critique. Its intended to be humerous.

Eragon is garbage. Half the posters here could probably write better, or at the very least not make a story that's a mash-up of Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.

WOULD YOU PLEASE LOOK INTO THE FVCKING ENGINEER TRILOGY BY KJ PARKER SO I MAY SLEEP AT NIGHT?!

"Go then, there are other worlds than these."

****in awesome!

If you haven't read the Dark Tower you should certainly give it a try or at the very least read The Gunslinger. It's an amazing book and the only book I prefer by King is The Stand (another one I would highly recommend).

I'm pretty sure I won't be able to read all these book y'know.

omg kickass dr who ep. tonight

Almost done with DX HR. Very epic.

My friend and I were talking about DX today and we both were confused- how do you pronounce "Deus Ex?"

I said "day-s ex" and he said "dooss ex."
