"The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels.
A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to- hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.
More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

Yeah, I thought I just randomly quote a book...one that's better than the Bible too. [/B]

True, true.

true-ish.

Well I would argue that Hitchhikers is a more enjoyable read, even if it hasn't contributed the same amount to society (both good and bad), when one simply wants to read a book. But then that is true for anything, a dictionary is better then Hitchhikers if one wants to check their spelling, and so on.

Most book's I've read have some sort of redeeming value.

Oh, I don't doubt it, and I remember, in English Extension a couple of years back, having to argue the value inherent in Mills & Boones romance novels. An intriguing experience. Even the most shallow books have a social value somewhere (got a great score as well.)

What I was getting at is the situation and what a person is looking for in a book. Depending on that certain books will appeal more, or be rewarding, in the context. Not long ago here there were a couple of shows on TV, Australia's favorite book and Australia's favorite movie. People voted and the top ten were revealed on TV. Anyway, I remember being surprises that the Bible got so high in the top ten. It made me wonder whether people voted for it either because of what it is (think Citizen Kane) or if there actually is a huge number of people who sit down and think "Yeah this is a great book. Great characters, great plot, I just can't put it down!" Incidentally LotRs came first.

But as to Citizen Kane - critically acclaimed technically and thematically. I agree, and it would be in my top whatever list. But while does good in "Greatest films" it never does as well in popularity contests - not because it isn't great or popular, but because it is popular in a different way then, say, Star Wars. The Bible, in literary terms, would be comparable to Citizen Kane in my view. It is worthy of respect as a book, but I don't know about it putting it ahead of more readable, "enjoyable" books.

The Crystal Castle in the sky,
With walls of Jasper for you and I.

My dads the "king" of this whole Earth,
He gave me life, he gave me birth.

The streets of gold, the gates of pearl,
His footstool is this whole wide world.

Each stone that’s laid, a different gem.
The whole foundation, built of men.

Peter, James, Luke and John,
They spread his word, that now lives on.

The mansions vast of beauty spread,
They’re for the living, not the dead.

He calls all people to hear his voice,
But one must choose and make a choice.

To live with Christ eternally,
Accept his love, he’ll set you free.

Free from sin, and free from pain,
Free from bondage, free from chains.

For one day we shall hear the sound,
The trumpet blows straight through the ground.

The dead in Christ shall rise up first,
And then the rest upon the Earth.

We’ll meet the Lord up in the sky,
To this old world, I’ll say goodbye.

Up to the crystal castle there,
Where daddy gives us each a share.

This is not a fairytale, as some would think it is,
I’m really going home someday, with daddy I shall live.

Its too long. Hermann Hesse's books have been some of the most influential in my life. Siddartha is 122 pages and Demian is 145.

Why would spiritual beings need things made of solids such as pearl and gold??

skepticism is one thing. there are a lot of people who will bash him or her for his or her beliefs.

HA!

You just called anyone who doesn't believe what you do a hater. And then act like Christianity is so effing oppressed.

If you actually were around this forum, you'd know that the only people who really continually bash others are Christians.

I always wondered about that. When people do and have described "heaven" it has always been in a way that would appeal to your average, embodied, corporeal human being. As a soul drifting about I struggle to see the purpose of trees with all sorts of fruit or mansions made of gold.

Really just seems to appeal to the greedy on earth. Maybe God thought "hmmm. How to get conversions... I know, I'll make heaven gold, then greedy humans will be practically dying to get in here, and in the process forget the logical problems with the whole shebang. Genius!"

Really, god just likes shiny things...like little white boys with golden hair.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of me I am not here to make me look good or to win any argument. Jesus Christ is personally inviting every one of you to spend eternity with Him in Paradise. Jesus died to give you eternal life, peace, joy, comfort, abundance, love, and happiness. You may not experience all of these things in this life right now but YOU CAN in the life to come. Don't die in your sins, die in Christ (i.e. forgiven of all your sins). I will put up with all the flack, criticism, hostility, anger, oppositon, hatred, misunderstanding, etc. It does not even faze me. I am well persuaded that God is true, Jesus is true, Heaven is true, and Hell is true (unfortunately). Yes, Jesus Christ is alive; He rose from the dead triumphantly. He who is of God hears God's Words. Many of you are not of God that is why you do not hear (i.e. understand). You do not know when you will breath your last breath. Don't die in your sins. Ask Jesus into your heart sincerely by faith. You have nothing to lose. If what I am telling you is untrue (but it is not) you are still going to die. But I do speak the truth, my God bearing witness. I want to see everyone of you in Heaven when I die. I want to see your faces shine with the glory of God. I want to see your faces as you see God in all of His splendor, glory, and majesty sitting on His throne. I want to watch as the Lord Jesus Christ embraces you in His everlasting love. I want to watch you marvel as you walk on streets of pure transparent gold. I want to see your expression as you realize that the Word is true all along and that you almost missed Heaven because of unbelief. Don't miss Heaven. This may be your last chance to accept Love (i.e. Jesus Christ). Love is Christ and Christ is Love. Receive His love into your heart by faith and you will be saved. You will have eternal security. You will never die again. You will live with Christ Jesus in eternal love and peace. This is Jesus Christ's personal promise to you.

Well, that's real nice and stuff, but I'm afraid that you're speaking complete and utter gibberish.

Don't be affraid of gibberish, embrace it as cr@p.

Especially if you have the Holy Hand grenade of Antioch. Nothing kills murderous rabbits with GREAT BIG TEETH faster.
