NBA discussion thread

Hey see if you guys can settle an argument for me I've been having with a freind. We were watching some NBA highlights on you tube when we got into this argument about the three kinds of speed in an NBA game. We agreed that the three were
Speed
Quickness
Explsoiveness

We both agreed that Speed is simply foot speed. How fast a player cna get up and down the court from one end to the other on a fast break or a drive. Guys like Tony Parker, and Leandro Barbosa are god examples of this. Both these guys are pretty fast up and down the court but they seem to have problem with direction changes and being funneled into a set defense but cna easily leave their man behind.

Quickness is the other category. This is about a person who can weave quickly through traffic. Dwayne Wade and Allen Iverson are great examples. Both these guys have great speed though. I can't thin of anyone who doesnt have oth speed and quickness.. maybe KG?

Explosiveness is pretty much the area we disagree in. I say that Explsosive ness is simply power and jumping. Meaning we all know that guys like Lebron and Amare are explosive but I think that Shaq is explosive too, simply because of the power he has during a dunk. He says it something like the ability to leave the guy behind in a very short distance whether running or jumping he says that Shaq is just big.

What do you guys think.

Yeah, but I do like that they can trade the picks with conditions. I like the highest bidder on that picture. 🙂

I guess they have to considering their is only two rounds.

I never get exicted about the draft like I do with the NFL. I have no idea why. It seems like after the top 4 picks, its pretty much pointless to watch the rest.

Speed is the overall speed of a player. The average speed over a course of 100 yards. Pretty much pointless to have a guy who has alot of speed in the NBA.

Quickness is how quickly a player can accelerate. In my opinion, very important for the NBA.

Explosiveness is another word for quickness. Sounds better.

I would say Explosiveness is a combination of quickness and power and/or strength. I agree with you that Shaq can be explosive, in his younger days, he was extremely explosive but injuries and age have slowed him down(although at times he can still be explosive, just not as much.) Your friend definition of "leaving there guy behind in a short distance" is rather vague. You need quickness and/or power to leave the guy behind. Shaq still has power, but like I said before his quickness has diminshed with age and injuries.

I think more in these terms (which are close to what has been said before):

1. Speed is simply how fast you can run.

2. Quickness - I like to the of the agility latter or agility jump test (jumping back and forth over a line). So I would have to agree with the changing of direction and how fast ones footwork is (even if it doesn't mean getting to another place fast).

3. Explosiveness IMO is how fast and how much power one can use while leaving from a recoiled position. So like when you crouch down, you use your 'explosiveness' to jump up. I think you can also see explosiveness on one's 1st step from a three-point position. I get this from my 8 years of sprinting. We were always working on "exploding" out of the blocks. Also, another thing to think about is power cleans (or clean and jerk). The lift requires speed and power, aka explosiveness.

I hope that helps.

So the Suns are trying to get PJ Brown. I'm not sure if he will fit in their running system, but he is defensive minded. What do you guys think? If that is what the Sun's plan to use the $8 mil exception for, I don't think it is a good move. If they had more means to get him, more power to them. But essentially this may have been the trade if you look at it as a whole:

Suns receive:
PJ Brown
2nd round pick
& maybe a little bit of money

Gave away:
Kurt Thomas
2 future first round picks

I'm not sure if I would do that.

If they can get P.J. Brown for less what they were paying Thomas than I would say its good move, of if they pick up one more bench player with the money they got for Thomas, otherwise, I'm not to sure about that move either.

Agreed.

Good job explaining. Another example is Carmelo Anthony's 1st step which is probably the most explosive in the league. He's not particularly fast or quick but he's first step allows him to get past most defenders for a dunk or get enough room for his jumper.

Carmelo has a nice first punch too.

And he follows that punch with an explosive first step.... to run away.

😆 😆

I knew that was coming.

Don't get me wrong I like Carmelo but that one punch ruined what would have been a mvp and possibly a championship season. If 'Melo can make people forget that punch and have a great year and maybe a title all will be forgiven.

MVP? I don't think so.

This past season. Prior to the punch he was having an MVP type season.

He would have been on the list, but no way would he have got it. You have to be kidding yourself if you think he was going to beat out Dirk and Nash.

It depends on where the Nuggets would have finished. If they got 55 or more wins I think he would have had a great chance to win it if his numbers were right.

Garnett to the Celtics almost done.

They're gonna have a crazy lineup.
Rondo
Allen
Pierce
Garnett
Perkins

Yeah I just heard about that.

Now I'm hoping the Lakers can do that trade that would send Bynum, Brown and Crittenton to the Paces for Jermain O'Neal, now that we know for sure we aren't getting KG.

I'm happy for Garnett. I think that will be a better situation for him. Lakers better do something fast, because I heard Kobe might push harder for a trade now that KG is out of the equation for sure.

Yea...

Now we got Garnett and Ray Allen. It's gonna be a good season.

Word. So now we got the Pats, the Celts, and the Sox ready to represent to the fullest. I think I'm gonna like living in Boston even more now.
