So here we go again. Letting someone in to his life and "sharing" with them. First that kid Jeremy from season 1, then Lila (kinda), then Miguel, then Lumen, then (kinda) Travis, then Hannah, now Creepy Face. Gee, do you think now, with only 6 episodes to go before series finale, that it will work out for once.
Quinn driving up to Dexter and smiling like a doofus was the funnest part of the episode. That that was the high point for me is pretty disappointing, actually.
The show's getting repetitive. All I could think when Dexter was considering Creepy Face for learning the code was how that's the exact angle they took with Jeremy and Miguel. They're literally just merging the two and calling it something new.
I'm oddly interested to see what they do with Hannah. I knew she'd be back, but I didn't expect an entrance like that.
Wow, what a compelling and interesting story Hannah's relationship with that moustache twirling villain was. Glad it wasn't introduced and finalized in the same episode, cuz that would have been really lame and groan-inducing. Almost as groan-inducing as recycling a love story with the same character and retreading the same ground that's been covered ad nauesum over 8 seasons.
I shouldn't have watched Breaking Bad first, I was utterly bored by this episode. Rehashed/rushed characters and plots considered, we're now juggling too many stories spread among too many characters. There's no fluidity to this show anymore, and no charm or humor. Dexter's inner monologue of "What kind of name is Miles anyway?" is the closest it's come to recapturing some of the fun and wit from the earlier seasons. And Elway being the most likeable character, and Masuka's relationship with his daughter being the most interesting story is NOT a good sign.
I'm already trying to predict which character will inevitably betray him first, Vogel, Hannah, or Creepy Face. It'll be something contrived and plot-mandated of course (neighbor's death was exactly that), but who'll be first, I wonder? Hopefully Deb. That'd actually be awesome.
So wait, was that guy actually the Brain Surgeon? I thought his M.O. didn't match up? Or was it actually him and..... we already killed off the only threat left in the show?
I'm not sure which would be worse: the brain surgeon killer story just being totally dropped and the rest of the season having no villain (probably centered around Hannah), being 5 episodes out and the final villain of the show not even being introduced yet, or the writers thinking they're clever and pulling the old "aha! you totally forgot about the brain surgeon but, get this, it's been VOGEL the whole time!!"
Edit: You know who would have made an epic Big Bad for the final season: DEXTER!
Having Dexter turn from amoral serial killer, to unlikely hero, to resented problem, to villainous monster would be too difficult and creative for Not Breaking Bad to pull off. Better to just strip him of all likeable personality traits and wrap the show up as predictably and flatly a way as possible.
Vogel did ask Dexter if he was sure he had never killed an innocent person. Maybe they'll make that a subtle reference to the fact that the Brain Surgeon was secretly being manipulated by Vogel, because she's fascinated with psychopaths and serial killers and thought f*cking with Dexter this much would make for a great book that will get released posthumously after Dexter kills her in the last showdown.
Or maybe they'll do nothing. Either way.
Something else I've noticed about this show, and I don't remember if this is series-wide or recent, is the total lack of creativity with the camera work. Take the opening of the recent Breaking Bad premier: something as simple as the camera moving slowly toward the door Hank is behind while the voices from the family drift in innocently from outside. That was a brilliant piece of cinematography compared to the sterile, overly efficient, emotionless angles in the last season or two of Dexter.

I was beginning to like Zach. He had a refreshing energy in his enthusiasm and earnestness. And Vogel! What a surprise twist. Didn't see that coming, that's fer dern sure.
Remember in the Plinkett reviews about the prequels, where he talked about the dull shot-reverse-shot scenes that permeate those films? Dexter has that now. There's very little, if any creativity in the camerawork and set blocking. The show's become visually boring.

hehe, that Hannah/Dexter sex scene was just OTT, but yeah these last few seasons are LAME!!!
It was all great up til the Trinity season, I think part of the problem is that Dexter/Deb are the only interesting parts of the show now, I mean come on, the storyline for Jamie, Batista, Quinn & Masuka and his daughter, it's all boring fillers!
I was hoping they'd revisit Quinn's Suspicion of Dexter being up to something, two seasons back I think but that went nowhere either... Finale.. Finally. eh?
Yeah season 5 was good.
Season 6 was ass. I figured out the twist a few episodes in, Doomsday was a pants villain who came off as goofy and entirely unthreatening, Dexter was acting like a real ******* for taking Doomsday for himself instead of letting Deb have a really great big break in her first outing as Captain, the Deb incest subplot made me cringe and...... I can't even remember what else happened. Also the direction was shit. And it had that truly wretched first episode where Dexter shows us how cool he is by getting a blowjob from the former head cheerleader at his highschool reunion. Fawking gag.
During this episode I heard a creepy buzzing in the background that I thought was quite atmospheric while Vogel was talking about her sons. Very spooky.

I think it might just be shoddy direction and soundwork, but I really noticed the silence in this episode. Just so flat and boring, the scene didn't feel dynamic and atmospheric at all. You were right on the money with the lack of creativity LL. Scene after scene of flat, static shots. These people obviously don't care anymore.
The episode itself barely warrants comment. Hannah continues to be dull, I laughed when they said Zach meant a lot to Dexter, dude didn't give 10 shits about him, the Brain Surgeon plot is obvious and dumb. Dexter following the guy RIGHT OUT IN THE OPEN was mindmeltingly stupid. He literally stood right outside the window wearing a bright blue shirt for hours. Jesus..... haermm
So I'm about 20 seconds in to the episode and I've already got my Wha da fuuu? face on.
He meant so much to Zach? Whaaaa? Since when? That's a problem with the Dexter character; he's had so many ups and down emotionally that his affect display seems to be functionally dead. He's shown no emotion toward Zach other than annoyance. And only annoyance. And way to open with Hannah's "I'm so sorry." Her totally emotionless voice aside, who has sex after being told that their lover's apprentice was just murder-opsied? And who opens up post-f*ck dialogue with "I'm so sorry he's dead"? It's like this script was written for efficiency, not emotion. Oh my God, I think George Lucas wrote this season.
And he wants to see Vogel to plan their next move? Why? With the Brain Surgeon dead, Zach dead, and only Vogel left... who does he think the brain surgeon is? Zach just happened to be targeted and just happened to be dumped in Dexter's apartment? The only remaining link in the brain scooping case is Vogel. She should instantly be suspect #1!
