I've been noticing that you and I tend to think alike, Quiero.

It's nice to know that someone else is as warped as I am. 😉 😛

Not really. I agree with you on those two points, but I disagree with Quiero on many others.

You're forgetting a major point here: Most people think the world started in 1990.
😱 it didn't 😛

Sadly, I think it is a necessary evil. Furthermore, I'd be all for an amendment in the Constitution forcing teenagers to serve 2 mandatory years in an armed force after graduating high school, before they went on to college.

This would do 2 things: teach some discipline and make for a more combat ready nation.

Peace.

The most paranoid nation on earth ladies and gentlemen- America!

I don't know where BobbyD's original post was (quoted above this one), but I've always said that everybody should work 6 months in a restaurant. One, you learn how to deal with difficult people (both on and off the payroll), and two, you learn not to stand there whining because your french fries took 20 seconds longer than expected, and three, everyone would tip better.

Mandatory military service is a good idea provided that:

0. It is not mandatory. However, those who do serve thier alloted time become franchised citizens. Those who do not, remain unfranchised.
1. It is a for a limited period (2 years), regardless of war.
2. It is for non-combat positions only.
3. It has incorporated some minimal form of higher education.
4. It provides the opportunity for career (meaning with pay) advancement in the Armed Services after the mandatory period is up.

Drafts only occur because fresh recruits are needed on the front. NOT because there's a cook shortage.

I believe Alliance is not talking about the draft but mandatory military service as a part of citizenship.

Still, if everyone is required to serve, then some of them would have to take up combat jobs.

Israel and South Korea both have mandatory service and they're not all just cooks and medics.

Well in time of war then you duties would change but for normal service you wouldn’t be required too unless you opt for the option for a combat position. Most positions in the military are non-combat positions.

Are you crazy? Let's remember that countrys like Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy had mandatory military service for young people. America already has one of the world's strongest armies and you want to strip people of their right to not want to be in the army?

If the draft is ever re-instituted, I'm claiming conscientious objector status.

I'm not for a draft, but I do think Sparta had a great idea.
