Seeing as how it is in the New Testament, as you say, I'd like to know why is that required ? I thought Christ himself would atone for all of that....

"And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble. cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and that not thy whole body should be cast into hell."

Did I guess right? This is clearly telling you to remove the things from your life that tempt you to sin.

Ironically, I was typing that exact same thing, but then deleted it. That's exactly the point, you don't need to cut off your right hand, Jesus is telling us to remove things in our lives that wil tempt us and cause us to stumble. If Jesus meant it literally I am sure he would have told his disciples to cut off limbs left right and center.
