Superman: Man of Steel

Come to think of it with all the superhero movies in the last 10 years it's surprising none of them have managed to attach such an epic score to their name like Williams did for Superman back in 1978.

I know with Iron Man they used the song of the same name in the first movie, Mainly the tune.

Why does it look "meh"? What exactly do you mean by "Meh"?

Lame. Nothing special. Boring, even.

Honestly, while I don't mind a more modern score to a point, it would be like doing a Star Wars movie without the intro music. It might work and suit what's on screen, but for a lot of people, you want to hear it when the movie is on.

John Williams is a victim of his own success. His Superman theme is THE Superman theme. It gets used in everything from video games to youtube videos.

I'm not sure that makes him a victim of his own success since his gone on to compose several scores that both match and outdo the success of the Superman score. Perhaps his score for Superman was unique in that it treated the source material with a measure of respect. But he has an incredible amount of successful scores post-Superman.

I was a staunch opponent of losing the Superman theme since to me that would've been the equivalent of getting rid of the 'S' symbol. I am, however, now realizing that it may be more like losing the red trunks... aka a recognizable and loved part of the character but not absolutely necessary for us to recognize him.

I wouldn't have minded if the movies started off with the first few blasts of the superman fanfare on horn and then dove into completely new material (kinda like how Star Trek does it) just to "sonically tie it to the 'S' symbol" but, again, I won't be super-sad if they don't use anything from the previous scores. The Williams score may be peerless, but it is a product of a very different time. And very Donner.

I should rephrase: other composers working on Superman scores are the victims, not Williams himself.

I'm ready for something to become symbolic with Superman other than Williams.

Williams' theme is iconic, but overrated for me.

I like Shirley Walker's theme for Superman much better;

Yeah, I said the movie looks meh based off of the trailer.

Calm your fanboyism. Superman isn't a real person.

I just called you out on that, nothing more. You know, calling a movie lame based on a 2 minute trailer is pretty stupid.

Way to go captain obvious.

I said ages ago it's time to ditch that score. As classic as it was, we need to let go of Donner's movies now and move on to what will hopefully be an Epic Reboot.

LOL Sounds like someone's jealous of IM's success and the awesomeness Downey brought to that character.

Jealous? Of Downeyman? LOL, more like bored. Don't get me wrong, I liked IM but IM2 and avengers portrayals of Downeyman just sucks.

Sorry, Pr. Didn't saw your post in time to edit my post. I'm going to stop now.

I would say Elfman came close with Spiderman and Batman (yeah not in the last ten years but whatever), but, you're right, none have matched William's.

Elfman's Batman was totally kickass. The defining Batman theme for me.

edit: Just listened to it. You must too:

It took me a long time to accept the Williams score over this .... I ain't ditchin' Williams so fast...

...but the angelic/messianic music, as heard in the MoS trailer, certainly adds to the aura of The Icon.

Cap >(infinity) Batman.

Ah yes the Batman theme from Tim Burton's movie. That one had a good association with Batman. Pretty Epic. William's Superman still kicks ass.

But other superhero scores don't even come close to either of the of those 2.

Although Elfman composed the Spiderman theme it suffers from being too anonymous melodically. It's really more of a heroic ambience, than a strong theme. That seems to be the general ambition of most superhero themes these days.

Hans Zimmer's Batman outings may fit the trilogy (other than how he hits you over the head at every turn) but it isn't a strong theme.

William's theme DOES kick ass, but it is dated.

I said it "looked" meh, based off of the trailer. There isn't anything for you to call me out on, fanboy. lol. The entire point of a trailer is to give you a glimpse of the film.

👆 Ye Ole Fleischer toons...

-- Origin of "Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No..."
-- Contained the initial ideas for Superman's origin, as well as early costume design.
-- Used (limited) rotoscoping (invented by Max Fleischer). Man I'd've loved to have seen rotoscoping with the modern toons...

Music-wise: opening notes = 👆

I don't think the poster your referring to was actually making a point regarding Singer's sexual preference. He probably just hates Singer for what he did to Superman like a lot of us do. (I also hate him for what he did to Cyclops!)

But tbh Superman Returns does feel like a woman directed it.

Better than him just flying thinking of Lois. That's all I remember when I think of SR.

Merry Christmas everyone!!

I'm glad to see someone was smart enough to get what I was saying. The man is gay and directed his movie as such (regardless of who he kisses) like the batman director who put emphasis on nipples on a leather suit..Singer put emphasis on his gay mans fantasy love triangle rather than putting out fires, catching criminals and kicking ass. maybe some of you have never seen that Superman before.
Come to think of it...some of you are just too interested in my (kissing men) comment. ..just sayin. BTW HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
