You may remember my work in the "Supes is the worst character ever" thread. Smallville cut out many of the things I don't like about Supes. I often refer to it as "Supes b4 he got corny". I don't think Supes appeals to the GA as much as his fans believe.

The little bits of Smallville I would catch every now & then looked horrible. The Doomsday stuff seemed inspired by Twilight or something. (Don't really remember if Twilight was out back then) I won't have the box set unless it's given to me.

How could I forget? 😛

Smallville took away a lot of good things from the character too, though. And besides, iirc a lot of the things you attribute as negatives, just don't exist anymore, and haven't for a while.

Superman as a concept is attractive to the GA. He's arguably the most well known superhero on the planet. Superman Returns was hated by so many people, yet did well at the box office (at least, relatively). Why? Because it's a Superman movie.

How anyone can like Smallville Superman more than the comics version is beyond me.

The comic version is portrayed as a much deeper character, is more of a badass, and has much more confidence in his relationships with people, especially women.

I could see how some people might see this version as less relatable to them.

DC's animated universe is top notch 👆
**** yeah! Been saying for years that they could compete & possibly beat Marvel's live action flicks if they just let the guys in charge of the toons make the live action movies.

I can't understand how you may like it over comic Supes.

How many Superman books did you actually read?

Not a lot. Just enough to know I didn't like him.

I don't think DC would say it did well. Thor made more WW and cost less to make

Neither DC nor WB would argue that it did well, that's true. I don't like Returns, personally, so I'm not going to praise it.

That said, it's still a Superman movie. Word will get out, and the fact that Christopher Nolan is involved can only be a good thing.

If you adjust for inflation and ticket price it probably grossed more than Thor. That said it hardly made any profit due to a ridiculously high budget (for that time).

Point being more people probably still watched SR than Thor despite the fact that Thor was a far far better movie.

Why? Because of the name "Superman."

Wow guess I'm in the minority here.

Whatever people here think of the show, it had a big audience and lasted 10 seasons. I doubt that would have been the case if Superman didn't appeal to the general audience.

Generally speaking, I liked the show. It took me a while to get over the changes they took liberty with (eg, Lana Lang not being a redhead; trying to figure how the whole glasses disguise was gonna work), and often I'd pass on the formulaic meteor freak of the week. Plus, I hate to say it, while Tom Welling very much looked the part of Clark/Kal/Superman (I'd even say, arguably better than any other Superman portrayer), he was not, imo, a good actor.

However, I thought the show, as a rule, had good writing, good character development, and often good stories, sometimes even with meteor-freak-of-the-week.

Unfortunately though, the series finale was disappointing. Welling really needed to "man up" the role, and he didn't. He still came across, imo, as "Smallville" nervously rising to the challenge.

^ Oh yeah the finale was horrible. And that's not forgivable since the whole damn show was all a big build up to that sh** finale.

That's assuming quite a lot. Can you prove this?

It's not assuming anything. Look up ticket prices yourself. They went up a lot from 2006 to 2011. 3-D sales especially went up a lot.

More people likely saw SR in the cinema than Thor. Although I doubt it's a big difference either way.

Lets be honest with ourselves, Smallville was NOT made for comic fans. It was made for folks who enjoy the thought of a superhero but prefer stories they would see on lifetime channel.

No, Im not saying that I havent watched it but I never really enjoyed it. it reminded me saved by the bell meets twilight.
Seriously, the only reason most guys watched it was because of the girls they casted in the show, and sadly most shows are like that. all looks and shitty script/story line.

As far as a Singer directing another Superman film....... No thank you, I would go watch paint dry on the walls before I'd watched some shit by him again.

At least I can agree with you on that.

I aint assuming either,

The prices vary depending on the 2d/3d/ imax/ ect and I love it.

WHY? because I will pay the extra $$ to get:

LESS TEENAGERS,
LESS NOISE
LESS CELL PHONES (the thought you even bring the damn thing into the theatre chaps my ass)
and less people walking in 10 minutes after the movie has started.
Most teenagers/kids or folks with infants wont pay extra to watch a movie and I take full advantage of paying a few more bucks to get more enjoyable experience.

Just because you didn't like the show doesn't mean you have to make up reasons why people watched it. Yes I know it was a big thing back in the day about what a babe Lana Lang was. But that kind of thing usually starts when people enjoy the show! (Anyone remember how Gillian Anderson was voted sexiest woman in the hey day of X-Files??)

Honestly the girl in Arrow is far hotter than Smallville's Lana Imho.

I enjoyed the show for the drama, plot, character interactions (always loved the Luthor scenes) and yes the fact that it was Superman and enjoyed all references to the Superman and DC verse that were made. And of course the Kryptonian action.

I loved Smallville for the most part. A lot of things did bother me as a Superman fan but all in all the show was nice. Liked the earlier episodes better than the later ones tho.....

Yeah, but can she go all teary-eyed at the drop of a hat like Kreuk? 😎

and you say I made it up and yet here you are saying the same cotton pickin thing.

Sir,
it has and always will be about sexy gap models over the storyline. But for the record theres nothing sexy about Gillian Anderson. Cmon man seriously?! a flat chested 98lb skeleton seen as sexy? the ones who voted her sexy are probly the types who run around making the "she has an ass like an 8 year old boy" comment. YES I've heard that in poublic many times.

Maybe I am a bit harsh on my opinion of Smallville, Please tell us what you liked most about the show..I have to hear this one.

inflation? you do realize that there is only a 5 yr difference? cost of living and pricing don't change that dramatically in that short a period of time.

nobody watched smallville for the superman aspect.
