And, actually, Thanos hasn't stood toe to toe with someone in Superman's class, because he hasn't fought Superman.
You see, Thanos loses to gods and universe level threats. And even high end enemies, like the Elders, Thanos defeats with his brain and trickery rather than power. Meanwhile Superman beats them. In fact, he has flown in, spun in a circle real fast, and dealt with guys on Thanos' level.

from the comic. it is the reason he didnt want to do battle with him as he was actually planning on doing other things.

yeah, he has beaten, sometimes stomped, the silver surfer, x-man, thor, classic drax, the maker, lord mar-vell (a couple of which are astronomically more powerfull than SM) the list goes on. your perceptions on SM's "level" are dellusional
