Thanos is a walking plot device, his so called jobbings are caused by things that actually happen between the universe and that make sense. I agree that his battles arent straight but its not the same kind of jobbing done against Captain America. Thanos is justified because he is uber-smart, the Cap because he is the hero.

You wanna know what happened the first time Thanos and Surfer met? Surfer blasted him all out, and Thanos looked at him like he was a moron. What did he say?
"Are you done?"
So, energy blasts are out of the picture. Norrin knows that his only option is to go to the fists, and he'll get punked. Also, it's painfully obvious that you don't read Silver Surfer, so I'll tell you the context of most of their encounters: Surfer has no choice but to take Thanos down, because he's a threat to the universe.
He has no other option. If the most powerful hero in the MU runs from him, what does that say?
Also, nobody fights stupid when they fight Thanos. He just schools them. If you had even read even one of his comics, you would know that most people are going all out. This is a guy who nearly matched the energies of the In-Betweener with the Soul Gem, got bored with Thor when Thor had the power gem, outsmarted the Elders of the Universe, etc.
There's no jobbing. There never was. You're just going to claim it because of your ignorance and lack of knowledge.
Thanos wouldn't necessarily be a sitting duck if someone fought him at a distance. He puts up his forcefields and no heat vision from Superman or cosmic blasts from Surfer are getting through. And he could hit them with a telepathic attack (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/Ixion83/Thanos10i.jpg) or fire an energy blast after you and direct it towards you (bottom right: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/Ixion83/CaptainMarvel31i.jpg). He stuck Odin in a block of pure force without touching him, he could do the same to Surfer or Superman. If he hits you with a blast he could bind you in cosmic energies etc. It doesn't all have to be punches.

How about he just pwns his ass telepathically? He CAN match telepathy with Moondragon and even go against Galactus for a while.
And Thanos isn't slowpoke, his reactions are fast enough to block stuff like blast from Surfer with his hand. Just because he doesn't zip around with lighspeed (He can't fly) doesn't mean that his reaction speeds can't be good.

Hawk Man doesn't have the ability to fly thru planets like they are cheese and withstand double black holes either. Not really a fair comparison. Superman loses, but Thanos won't have an easy go of it. I wonder How thanos would fair if he had to fight Superman near the SUn like DS did.
