they fear orion cos firstly, he's a new god, and second, orion has no qualms about ripping your head off if it suits him...
and they'd just been in a fight with superman... who was not 'helpless' by any means...

kalibak was amped, and insanely so. even clark said so. and this is in the same series where not two, three issues later clark was slugging it out with the infinity man, and holding his own.
