Best English band of the nineties?

Nope. For starters, Tricky had one great album, Massive Attack had 3. And without Massive Attack...well...dunno if you know enough about the two to make my point...but Tricky's not "all that".

First off, what albums are great and what aren't are subjective.

Second, Tricky was the main creative force behind The Wild Bunch, Rob del Naja bases most of what he does on Tricky.

Massive Attack, while very good, just had the most accessible sound of a unique and fascinating genre. They used trip hop in a true, but accessible way. Tricky was less accessible.

Tricky's Maxinquaye may be a peak he'll never reach again, but it's a peak Massive Attack haven't reached...ever.

Which is also subjective. Tricky is amongst my favorite artists, but I personally think Mezzanine is a level above even Maxinquaye. And aside from one or two tracks, it is not accessible. It's not even trip-hop, in fact.

Well, of course it's subjective. Though I tend to rate Tricky more because he's original and doesn't get the credit he deserves, Massive Attack get the credit he deserves.

Mezzanine isn't accessible? I think it's their most accessible album.

100th Window is an album you should talk about if you don't want accessible.

You're both wrong

Neither of us are right or wrong, it's opinion.

Taste and perception are subjective. Just because some perception is better than others, doesn't make the overall opinion based on the perception to be factual.

I've always considered it (Mezzanine) far too dark and abstract to be accessible, especially the latter half of it. One of the those albums I really love, but have trouble with when trying to pick an individual track (that's not Teardrop) to win over someone who's never heard it before.

I'll always say Risingson is my favourite off that album.

Or possibly Dissolved Girl, with Angel and Inertia Creeps as close followers.

I personally feel that if Massive Attack are going to be famous for one song, it should be Teardrop, more so than Unfinished Sympathy.

Radiohead.

At one point, I thought Oasis would be bigger than The Beatles. They sounded enough like them with "Roll With It". Fact of the matter is, they broke out half way through the decade, had a flop of a debut ("Definately, Maybe" which nobody seems to remember.) and pissed whatever good fortune they had away.

Definitely, Maybe was their best (used loosely) album.

Oasis
Blur
The Libertines
Happy Mondays
The Rolling Stones
Radiohead
Manic Street Preachers
KLF
The Prodigy

While of course everyone is free to their own opinions, I would make a couple of comments.

I'm afraid you're totally wrong bud. Definietly Maybe wasn't in flop in Europe...and definietly not in the UK. It's one of the best selling albums in British history. It also got a lot of radio play on Canadian college radio. It wasn't well known in the states, but that doesn't mean it's a flop.

They hit it big with the breakthrough "Wonderwall" to go international...had a couple decent singles off "Be Here Now" that sold well internationally too, but after that, the "bigger than the beatles" thing kinda died.

To this day, they are still very popular everywhere but the states...(but just to fill you in, it's pretty much because Oasis say that every new album they release is their best one ever, and that's the only way people get sucked into actually thinking they're still good or relevant...they've become a total joke, where they were once one my fave groups of the 90s).

I hold the same opinion. I find something new every time I listen to Mezzanine. To me, it's one of the greatest albums ever. Just nothing else like it.

Not totally. It flopped in the United States, where I live, and even I owned it when it came out.

That picture is just gay.

It's more gay than the LoveSexy albumcover. Which isn't gay. 😆

and you're entitled to it...but let me voice my opinion that i so not agree with your "opinion"...please let me elaborate with the following comments...

"The Manics aren't English"...no? what are they? please don't say Welsh..or i'll cry...
okay here's a suggestion: let's settle for British...mmkay?

yes..The Libertines are this and that..okay..but next time you want to "comment" on a subject...why not do it in a bit more constructive fashion?

They are Welsh.

I'm pretty sure this thread is more about the Britpop movement than actual English bands which would qualify the Maniacs yes?
