Star Trek XI & Sequel News Thread

I'm looking forward to seeing it. I'm a big fan of ST and TNG, so I'm skeptical about there even being a need for a reboot of the franchise. However, everything I've heard has been totally positive. If there are so many SW fans who enjoyed it, it can't be all that bad. Not that I really understand why anyone would hate Star Trek simply because they're Star Wars fans. The two are nothing alike. They're two totally different genres. Just because they both have characters and space ships doesn't mean they're the same. My skepticism and lack of interest have turned out to be a good thing because it's prevented me from really putting any effort or attention into the plot. So in a few weeks when I go and see it, I'll actually be walking into it without any fore-knowledge. This is a rare thing for me because I hate going to the movies, so I have to make sure it's worth actually walking into a movie theater. The last movie I saw in the theater was The Dark Knight. Movie theaters are nasty, distracting, crowded cesspools, so I have to want to see a movie enough to go through that. Plus, I can stay at home and watch TV if I want to see car commercials. So, all the positive reviews have convinced me to give this one a chance.

No, I agree. He lost control, as he should have. I'm not referring to that at all. I'm referring to how he recited his lines. They were too full of emotion. I think Zachery put a little too much emotion into his lines, unlike Leonard Nemoy. And, no, Spock did not try to obtain logical enlightenment (kolinahr) until after his Starfeet career. What I wanted to see was a character that spoke more calmly than Zachery did. Hell, Tim Russ (Tuvok) did better as a Vulcan than Zachery did. However, sometimes T'Pol(Jolene Blaclock) put too much emotion into her lines...but she still was a better Vulcan to Zachery. Which was my point. I think he looked the part. Sometimes, it looked as though Zachery could be Spock's brother (Star Trek Spock)

Holy balls. I have never really given any solid attention to Star Trek other than the random episode (I used to watch Voyager but I don't remember anything but Janeway and Seven of Nine), but this movie made me consider giving more thought to the matter of exploring one of the science fiction worlds I hadn't pushed into yet.

you should.. you may like a lot of episodes

yep, I also liked Chris Pine.. He did a very good job as James T. Kirk

I was really enjoying this movie until the Villain was introduced in the second act. Most of the movie was handled with care and a fair amount of respect and i even praise the casting. The actors did a very fine job. I was genuinely interested in them. For as much risk as the writers took with taking the series into an alternate timeline i am left wondering why they didn't bother with properly developing the protagonist. Neros' drive to do what he did was empty and ridiculous. I didn't, for one minute believe his anguish or reason for committing mass genocide. Just like other failed Star Trek movies it felt like an ignored plot device. It almost ruined the entire movie for me. However, all other aspects of the film were handled so well i was able to overlook that. I was also put off by Nimoys' entrance but i guess for a summer blockbuster that would be considered nitpicking and even though it was rushed it worked well, if not for nostalgia sake. Again, i enjoyed the movie but i was highly disappointed and almost offended with the Villain and his reasons for doing what he did.

I watched the entire movie and didn't even realise that Eric Bana was Nero.

Nimoy was one of the best parts!!

But yeah, I pretty much agree about the villain (although it didn't come close to ruining the movie for me). Eric Bana's a good actor though, he would've been able to handle a more challenging role.

Take a towel to protect the back of your head and some latex gloves, you'll be fine.

Anyone else impressed by Karl Urban as Bones? I think he did the best portrayal.

lulz

"Damnit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a physicist!"

Wasn't just that, the attitude, the expressions, the demeanor etc were all pretty spot-on.

Anyone else spot the tribble?

"To tell the truth you don't amaze me,
i'm from killa hill projects,
a Star Trek phaser couldn't phase me."

I always liked that line, hehe.

Artist - Method Man

Album name - Tical

Release year - 1994

Why is Nero getting so much hate? I thought Eric Bana's characterization was brilliant. It seemed like he was taking some cues from heath ledger in delivery of some of his lines ("Hi Christopher, I'm Nero"😉. He seemed to be completely bereaved, and deranged to the point where he was just completely irrational and didn't care about anything anymore. He could have waited around for 25 years for Spock to arrive, destroyed Hobus with the red matter, and then pulled a slingshot with Spock's help and resumed life on an intact Romulus and everything would have been fine, instead he became obsessed with punishing Spock and starfleet.
Here's something I would like to see. In the future, something happens because of the change in the timeline that is very bad, war with the Klingons or Romulans, V'Ger destroying Earth, the whale probe destroying Earth, something that could have been prevented that makes this alternate future unbearably horrible. So some person in the future (preferably a character whom we know) finds out that their history is wrong but is unsure how and attempts to change it as the shadowy character commanding the Suliban in Star Trek Enterprise.

There was a tribble? Damn, I missed that! Time to go see it again 😉

I missed the tribble too.

Bana's Character was a victim of the latest trend with Orci and Kurtzman or whatever their names are.

They write movies that are moded into this "If you reaaaaaalllllly want to understand the movie that that you've just paid to see, then you'll have to buy and read the prequel comic/merchandising to understand anything about not minor, but the MAJOR characters" thing.

They did it it with TFs (in regards to the TFS, mainly the decepticons) and now they've done it with ST, to Bana.

Now Im not anti EU per say, but when the need to understand EU rules your enjoyance of such a movie, this they're taking the piss.

Whats one of the leading arguments against watching pirates..?
"You might not experience the full quality of the movie"

Well wouldn't it be nice if those fu**ers would stop writing stuff that leaves half the movie out....?

Greed....? Sloppiness...?

You decide.

(Just to clear up my issue is not "Shit Bana" but "why was I left wondering who Bana's character was after two and a half hours of (quality) movie."

I liked it a lot. I'd probably give it an 8/10, as it was certainly not perfect, but it was a really enjoyable, fun film. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban were all great (as, of course, was Nimoy), though I would have liked more of an exploration of the character of Nero (and at only just over 2 hours, I reckon the film could've devoted a bit more time to him). The characters definitely made up for a fairly weak plot, and some very dubious science.

The red matter thing..?
