I was really enjoying this movie until the Villain was introduced in the second act. Most of the movie was handled with care and a fair amount of respect and i even praise the casting. The actors did a very fine job. I was genuinely interested in them. For as much risk as the writers took with taking the series into an alternate timeline i am left wondering why they didn't bother with properly developing the protagonist. Neros' drive to do what he did was empty and ridiculous. I didn't, for one minute believe his anguish or reason for committing mass genocide. Just like other failed Star Trek movies it felt like an ignored plot device. It almost ruined the entire movie for me. However, all other aspects of the film were handled so well i was able to overlook that. I was also put off by Nimoys' entrance but i guess for a summer blockbuster that would be considered nitpicking and even though it was rushed it worked well, if not for nostalgia sake. Again, i enjoyed the movie but i was highly disappointed and almost offended with the Villain and his reasons for doing what he did.
What follows is from my point of view.
Honestly, they could have had the hamburgler for the villain for all I care. I went to the movie to see Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Checkov, Sulu & Uhura. As long as they had a villain that was somewhat serviceable I'm good with that. I think this movie was mainly to intro the original series characters. Now the next movie the villain needs to be written very well and Im hoping for a Klignon.
