It says right on panel, that if his opponent is strong enough he can beat an avatar.

Tell me this, does Thanos have an entire planet, of technologically advanced skyfathers, on his ass? Do you really expect Darkseid, to easily out prep New Genesis, without a power up? Of course Thanos could, because he "conquered the universe" several of times. Darkseid is more well known, in his universe, than Thanos is, in his. Thanos can operate under the noses, of many cosmics, for they where NOT on his ass, in the first place. I'd like to see Thanos run a bigass empire, without having people, in his business.
