Because it just plays into the stereotypes that 1) women do not play video games and 2) on the rare occasions they do, can only handle casual games.Which are, you know, not true.
Anything that is sexist is going to bother me, obviously.
I can do without the naked guys, but strong female protagonists? **** yes, we need more of that. Stop relegating the girls to a sidekick position at best, and let them be more than just eye candy.
mm. I guess it just comes down to different perspectives. Personally, I don't really give a shit about the fact that there are even fewer strong black protagonists then there are female ones altogether. Why should I?

Lana, I am curious as to what you consider a strong female protagonist?
Samus. Lightning. Zelda would be if they'd make a game where she is the actual protagonist. Farah. Elika. Faith. Midna. Amaterasu. Yuna developed into one over the course of the game. Most of the female characters in Soul Calibur, despite their appearances. Garnet/Dagger.
Outside of games...
Princess Leia. Arwen, at least in the first half of LOTR. Alanna, Kel, Daine, Thayet, Aly, Dove, and Sarai from the Tortall series by Tamora Pierce; Sandry, Daja, and Tris from the Emelan books by the same author. Trinity. Hermione Granger. Ginny Weasley. Sailormoon (all of the Senshi, really).
Those are just some off the top of my head.

I think the question was 'what' not 'who'.
That said, Amaterasu is ossum.

Acknowledging the existence of women gamers would be a start. The majority of game advertisements play up over-the-top violence, drugs, gore, sex, etc. as much as they possibly can - the sort of thing that appeals primarily to mentally immature guys. Which also has the effect of repelling anyone who isn't in that category.
Obviously you haven't been keeping track on Gears of War 3. Because female gamers have been giving Cliffy B. a bunch of feedback of there not being any female soldiers in the franchise, he decided to throw in some female COGs and as a bonus, there is no stereotypical sexual appeals that would frustrate easily insulted women for Cliff thought that would be a pointless thing to do. See, female gamers are already advancing.

Being a dog and all. ๐
Good list though, from what I know.
Though sometimes, people try to create a strong female protagonist, and just make her an omega *****, which is an annoying trend in fiction. ๐
Edit: Also, yes, question was "what," not "who," but meh. ๐

Gears of War?
Really?
I find Gears of War insulting to men, I can only imagine how insulting it is to women. ๐

Sun-goddess, so yes.
I am slightly saddened that it took me as long as it did to come up with a decent list. Especially considering how I've always been frustrated by the lack of strong female characters in fiction and hence tend to gravitate towards things that have them.
And, ehhh. I guess that can be annoying, but I can't say it bothers me. There are some pretty huge double standards in how men and women are expected to act. It's also irritating how so often women are called a ***** simply for having an opinion of their own, and sticking by it and refusing to take crap from people. How is that a bad thing, exactly?
What I consider a good, strong female protagonist: Someone who is able to stand on her own and doesn't have to rely on other people for everything, intelligent, sensible, exists to be something other than eye candy or a love interest (and if they do fall in love, don't suddenly change and/or get relegated to the background).

Well it just proves that games and fiction in general just do not have strong female protagonists. 131
On a side note, something really made me dislike Lightning at first. ๐ And by something, I mean the fact that I am a Snow fanboy. estahuh
Well like I pointed out with Gears of War, I don't like it with male characters either.

I edited the hell out of my post ๐
And I like Snow a lot, too. But I love Lightning.
Also, trust me. I am well aware of the lack of strong female characters in fiction. I am a woman, after all. Sometimes I think you guys forget that ๐

An insult? Why, because most of the guys look like they're on roids? Most soldiers would need to work out if they're in a war.
