I don't think it does, normally. Only when he's been weakened first. When Surfer first arrived on Sakaar, he was drained going through the portal. And this time, he was running low on energy again. So...

Yep, I don't see it as a bad showing, he not only stripped the Old power, something that could feed Galactus for a hundred years from Skaar, he also sealed it away. Badass if you ask me.

That super nova was in another galaxy(a distant galaxy at that) and Surfer rode the shockwave all the way to our solar system in the time it took the FF to get back to the Baxter Building... that's one Hell of a blast.
