Yep, this was a Hulk straight outta the comics and that's why everyone likes him as of now.
Storyline-wise I really preferred 2003 Hulk. Especially, as someone else pointed out, as in the origin we already get a glimpse of the fact that at heart Hulk is a hero. Banner possibly sacrificing himself to save someone else vs making himself a human guinea pig.
Spoiler:The character's long comic history is great and while I thought I.M. was much better, there were a lot of armor upgrades (and armors) he had to forego if only because they made no sense with contemporary tech. He did go into the final battle against Iron Monger even though he knew
And a shown, casually abusive father (vs the comics bastard), is part of the Hulk's makeup that I enjoyed seeing in that it jives with the Hulk as he currently is.
Spoiler:which is why I don't mind the way the fight went.
his power supply wasn't going to be quite up to the challenge

I have to agree. I loved seeing the Hulk truly be visceral and not empy tanks with humans in them, and then use the tank as a weapon. The Hulk killing people was perfect, because it showed that he wasn't a pansy and wasn't going to take any crap from anyone. Had it not been for Betty he would've killed the Abomination as well.
While I don't agree with WWH's assertion that Hulk has never killed anyone accidentally, the fact is the military has, and should, be an annoyance to Hulk. Shaking the soldiers out of the tank(/blowing the tail off the chopper) like chips out a bag seemed more to humiliate the soldier's than anything. Almost as if saying 'humans are nothing w/o their weapons and their weapon's are nothing to Hulk'. Killing them would've honestly been too easy. 😉
Honestly, I was wondering how stupid Gen Ross could be to try nearly the same tactic twice only to predictably fail both times. At least Elliot's Ross was dealing with a truly unknown quantity. 2008 Hulk was based off the tv show and appropriately had plenty of sitings (noted by the newspaper entries)

and was being actively chased by the military for a while

Also, do you think one of the last scenes showing Banner's eyes glowing green as he transforms implies that he somewhat has control over the Hulk now?
The same could be said for the end of 2003's Hulk though too with Bruce actually being pretty calm/aggressive ( 🙄 ) as he told the bandits they wouldn't like it when he was angry. That made me shiver, especially as the camera pulled back and you could here the roar.
FWIW, I thought the 2003 DVD extra said that that Hulk had a maximum size which he had already reached, though his strength would continue to grow.
I honestly didn't find Liv Tyler capable of pulling off the forceful, grown woman Betty Ross, that Jennifer Connelly seemed to pull off so naturally.
But these are just my opinions.
Eric Bana didn't seem like he gained control, he just seemed like he wanted to get mad & change into the Hulk. Norton's Banner was actually meditating & seemed like he was forcibly bringing out the Hulk. As for Betty Ross, Liv Tyler did a better job as Connelly's character seemed too...one dimensional & even annoying to me.

I don't know, Peter. I think Liv Tyler plays a decent damsel in distress but I had a hard time believing she was a scientist or even really useful except for being a sidekick. It might be my general dislike for Liv Tyler.
But on the other hand, I had a hard time believing Eric Bana was a scientist but when I saw Norton on that switch box thing I could tell he loved him some science.
