I'm also a fan, but those restrictions were created not by mine. And the plot is really sometimes too action-driven, just because we're short of female cast for some reasons (there are only four female players including me out of 25+ participants, and since few men can desently roleplay a female character, there are less then 10 female characters in game).
That doesn't means that there's no place for love and stuff, though. For example, my Black Mamba is currently dating Stephen Strange Jr. (Ultimate Dr. Strange), and Queen of Diamonds has made Kyle Rayner her faithful knight (both are happy from the union).

Aaah, I left an x-men evolution one not long ago. We only had around 20 members, but the majority seemed to be female, which is quite rare. Fortunately, a female majority equals a smoothly run board and a minimum of arguments.
Right now I'm joining a board made by the same people, only it's not x-men evolution (thank god). I rarely do marvel/DC boards though, normally just Marvel. How is the mix working out for you?
My custom characters had one common trait- they all had some sort of psionic-related powers (preferably telepathy&telekinesis). My most loved one (about whom I wrote some fanfictions etc) was a character which you would get if you combine Manchester Black's powerset (high level TP and TK) with Emma Frost's looks (he was platinum blonde with light blue hair- I have sort of obsession with white haired characters) and aristocratic background (though the character itself was a British nobleman by origin).
We have to cope not just with Marvel/DC mix. We have lots of other universes allowed into one common universe (physical laws in fact are based on Wildstorm ones)- from Wildstorm to KOF&DMC comics adaptations (a friend of mine whoi was sort of sensei to me when it come to being a DM roleplays Dante there). As long as character can playsibly appear in mainstream universe and has analogues in Marvel/DC/Wildstorm/Image, he's welcome.
Characters from "rare" universes or Ultimate\amalgamated versions of character must start not in the mainstream game universe but in the set of locations known as the "Nexus of Worlds" (according to a plot of the game, it's composed of the "Shards" of the worlds which have collided into main universe during multiversal catastrophe). Form there you're able to access to major game universe via portals or interdimensional passages after completing some quests.
In Russian comics RPG community X-Men Evolution based games have bad reputation because of frightening number of Mary Sue characters of them. There also recently was a plague of Pyro-obsession on those ones, which ended up in making up pretty much crazy and MarySue'ish characters. Female players on those RPGs especially like creating Mary Sue characters for some unknown reason...
So I 'm not much into X-Men Evolution RPGs since those I've seen simply weren't class.

There are a lot of youngsters on the x-men evolution RPGs, which is why I try to stay away. By youngsters I mean people who are 15 and below. They're generally not just immature, but have only watched the x-men evolution series, which is annoying. They're sort of like Spidey-dude, if you know who he is. He's a member here 🙂
Roleplaying with poor rp'ers has never bothered me though, maybe it's because I am one.
As far as characters goes, mine are always have powers associated with fire or telepathy. I used my "torment" character quite a lot. His telepathic abilities were pretty much limited to amplifying pain and such. Then I realized that Emma could do the same thing from a distance, by waving her hand. Wasn't as fun after that :/

In fact those female players were hunting for "pretty powersets" which sometimes turned out to be an illogical pile of powers taken together...sometimes for only purpose to look "cool" and impress/attract male players.
A lot of female players at the game, though, is an advantage in terms of making love story plots.

The girls I roleplay with tend to be too fond of teenage drama. That gets old really fast.

Pyrokinesis, telepathy, telekinesis. The three whales of my custom characters' creating as well. In fact, I'm rarely try something non related to those powers or psionic powers at all whether I play custom or existing character. I just like to use powers I'm familiar with.
I'm also quite fine at roleplaying MA skills, but I prefer characters who can engage both in contact combat and have long range attacks...just in case.
My experience in trying to play action scenes with pure brawlers wasn't too good, though sometime action scene in form of MA duel without powers is a fun and sometimes I also like.
There's quite a few comics related RPGs in Russian comics fandom. And you're right about teenagers being a solid majority of X-Men Evolurion RPGs' players.

I solved that problem by a)consulting some friends who're know quite a lot about that (they are real-life MA practisioners, a close friend of mine is black belt in karate) ; b)watching lots of HongKong action movies;c)reading/watching stuff on MA theory.
Though I still don't think I'm really adept in that stuff...I'm decent, but some of my friends are better in that (though a friend of mine whom I consider my "sensei" in roleplaying martial artists and who was partially responsible for my love to K' and whom I consulted for a few years in terms of describing complicated MA related stuff says I'm quite good but it seems like he's complimenting me).
